2025 Subaru Impreza Overview

2025 Subaru Impreza

The 2025 Subaru Impreza is available in Canada as a five-door hatchback, which shares its platform, powertrain and interior components with the Subaru Crosstrek crossover.

Launched for the 2024 model year, the current-generation Impreza is available in four trim levels, with two powertrain options and standard all-wheel drive.

2025 Subaru Impreza Changes and Updates

For the 2025 model year, the Impreza received minor changes, including SiriusXM with 360L satellite radio compatibility (subscription required after three-month trial period), enhanced Apple CarPlay turn-by-turn navigation and improved front-seat headrest cushioning on all trim levels. The Touring variant also receives the brand’s Auto Vehicle Hold activation in the on-screen Home button area, while the Sport-tech gets Subaru Live Traffic with a one-year subscription.

2025 Subaru Impreza Trim Levels and Pricing

The Impreza is offered in Convenience, Touring, RS and Sport-tech variants. The first two are equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0L horizontally opposed (or Boxer) four-cylinder engine that develops 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, send to all four wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission. The RS and Sport-tech benefit from a larger-displacement, 2.5L four that generates 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. All but the base Convenience features a manual mode for the transmission with eight pre-programmed gears and wheel-mounted paddle shifters, as well as a drive mode system (called SI-DRIVE).

What the 2025 Subaru Impreza Does Well

  • It’s practical. The Impreza’s hatchback body provides good cargo room, whether the seatbacks are upright or folded down. Actually, when the seats are folded flat, max cargo space is rated at 1,586 litres, beating out the Honda Civic Hatchback, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback and the Mazda3 Sport.
  • Subaru’s Symmetrical full-time AWD is hard to beat in winter driving conditions. It maintains a 60/40 front/rear torque split, but can vary that split up to 50/50 as needed to maximize grip. Unlike most competitors’ on-demand AWD systems that send power to the rear wheels after slippage occurs (though this happens in milliseconds), the Impreza’s setup provides an extra layer of confidence behind the wheel on slippery surfaces.
  • The Impreza’s infotainment system is presented on a seven-inch touchscreen in the base Convenience trim level, but on an 11.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen in the rest of the lineup. The system is easy to use thanks to big button zones, and includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as standard. Overall, the Impreza’s controls are well laid out, so cabin ergonomics are swell.
  • As with most Subaru products, the Impreza enjoys a strong reputation for reliability and good resale value, meaning the car is as good for a short-term lease as is a long-term purchase.

What the 2025 Subaru Impreza Doesn’t Do Well

  • Prices have increased over the past few years. Sure, it includes AWD, but it starts at $30k and at that price, it’s right in subcompact crossover territory which some consumers may prefer. It also doesn’t look nearly as rugged as the Crosstrek, and adventure-styled vehicles have been trending for a while now.
  • We like the Impreza’s fairly big infotainment screen, but what we like less is that most climate controls are crammed at the bottom of it. These button zones are small and it takes a steady finger to poke them while driving.
  • The Subaru’s 152-horsepower engine doesn’t seem underpowered, but torque isn’t very generous and performance is leisurely. Not a big deal as such, but when shoppers realize the Mazda3 gets 191 standard ponies, they might consider the Impreza a little less interesting.
  • Fuel economy isn’t bad given the standard AWD, but it doesn’t beat the Mazda3 with its optional all-wheel drivetrain. And it certainly doesn’t beat the Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD’s combined city/highway rating of 4.7 to 5.3 L/100 km.
