Audi and Audi Sport are putting loads of emphasis on the new 2020 Audi RS Q8 and here it is, revealed for the first time at the 2019 LA Auto Show. With the most tricks up its sleeve, the largest wheels and the biggest profit margin, this is the Audi Sport vehicle that will serve as the poster-boy for the brand’s mighty RS cars and SUVs.
True Audi Sport and Audi RS enthusiast are far more interested in the stunning RS 4 Avant and the jaw-droppingly sublime RS 6 Avant. We’ve driven the latter and our full review will be up next week when the embargo lifts.
In the meantime, the 2020 Audi RS Q8 is a colossus of power thanks to its shared (with RS 7 Sportback and RS 6 Avant) twin-turbocharged TFSI 4.0-litre V8 which is coupled to a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Output is rated at 592-horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. With the right options, the RS Q8 will feature a top speed of 305km/h.
Putting the volcanic eruption of power to good use are a standard air suspension with up to 90mm of travel from the lowest to the height setting, 4-wheel steering, Audi’s quattro AWD system with rear sport differential, and up to eight drive modes. Six of them are pre-set and two can be customized. They are accessible through the RS button on the steering wheel and are RS 1 and RS 2.
Physically, the 2020 Audi RS Q8 will frighten little children. It a has a completely new front end with a high-gloss black honeycomb grille which is flanked by superb LED matrix headlight. The latter flow into flared out front fenders (10mm per side) which cover 22-in or, optionally, 23-inch wheels. The rear bumper is upgraded as well and both carbon fibre or aluminium trim is offered as an option.
The cabin is all Q8 with the exception of RS-specific front seats which are now cooled and massaging. Look for an RS steering and a few other hints that let you know you are in the fastest SUV in the world.
We actually set out to drive the new 2020 Audi RS Q8 in only a few weeks. We’ll let you know how we really feel about it then.
