The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC wagon is no McLaren 570S but you could buy four or five C 43s for the price of the Mac!
This review will do little to help you find flaws in Mercedes-Benz AMG-sauced C-Class station wagon. Is the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC wagon on your list? Stop reading, go a pick one up NOW before M-Benz Canada decides to pull the plug on the best car they sell. So few of these cars will be sold and it’s not available in the US – how can it possibly have a long shelf-life?
I regret many decisions in my life today. I should never have bought clothes, ate food and most of all, I should have stayed at home with my parents… Had I had the necessary foresight some 25 years ago, I could afford a C 43 wagon today. What an idiot I was!!
It’s my fault I can’t afford one
Fact of the matter is that the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC wagon is not that expensive. With a starting price of $59,900, it’s borderline reasonable when considering the prestige, performance and cool-factor (don’t even think it!). My tester included a number of tremendous features including the AMG Driver’s Package, Intelligent Drive Package, Premium Package, Head Up Display and AMG Carbon Fibre trim for a grand total of $75,500. And it was white.
My ideal combination would be Hyacinth Red metallic with 19-inch AMG twin 5-spoke wheels, the Saddle Brown AMG leather, AMG Driver’s, Premium and Technology packages, AMG Carbon Fibre trim, red seatbelts and the collapsible shopping crate for $74,900. Why am I telling you this? A man can dream, can he not?
A fault that can be fixed
If you’re looking for something negative, there are four of them: the fake quad tailpipes. I hate them. They look fine from far but from 4 meters away, you can tell they’re part of the bumper and are in fact nothing more than decorations. Truth be told, and relatedly, the AMG C 43 doesn’t sound that great. Mercedes-AMG’s given us so many fabulous ear-popping V8 resonances that the V6 sounds amateurish. Akrapovič makes an aftermarket system, so we’ve fixed the problem.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class wagon is gorgeous. Doused in AMG sauce, the C 43 should come with a NSFW tag. I could stare at this car forever. The slight bow in the car’s bodyline, mimicked in the prolonged roofline, defines elegance and poise. The cabin too is seductive. The killer is the car’s steering as part of the AMG Driver’s package. This unit, lifted from non-other than the Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO is a masterpiece of styling, ergonomics and grip.
All the lovely room and comfort
Along with the steering, we find great supportive seats, the available 10.25-inch center-high mounted screen, the lovely flowing center console and loads of room. Starting with the boot, I effortlessly slid in our large stroller, a large cooler and numerous day bags on a family road trip. Although Mercedes says there’s but 460 litres of volume in the rear, I’ll have to disagree and say there’s loads more at hand.
The rear bench easily accommodated the two baby seats and most impressive of all, my son’s feet barely reached the seatback while I was setup in my proper driving position. Some real SUVs can’t claim this. Up front, it’s heavenly.
It’s heavenly because this car is an excellent driver. The AMG-enhanced twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 is a doll. It produces 385-horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 384 lb.-ft. of torque from 2,500-5,000 rpm. With the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed and AMG Performance 4MATIC AWD, my wagon will shoot to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. As a matter of fact, this is the same mill as in the Mercedes-AMG E 53 which has 429-horsepower on tap but the same torque figure. Apparently, it’ll cover the not-to-100 in 0.3 fewer seconds but I doubt it.
The 9-speeder lacks a “sport” mode but without being aggressive, required less time to respond when I’d roll onto the throttle. On the highway, at slightly above the posted speed limit and loaded, the C 43 wagon hovered below the 10L/100km mark, which is better than decent.
The car is certainly fast but it offers something the previous Mercedes-AMG E 43 and GLC 63 S did not: a comfortable daily drive.
The standard adaptive dampers are tuned to provide a comfort zone or an initial ability to soak up rough surfaces. Truly, this is one of the car’s best aspects. Without touching a button, the C 43 wagon will still shine brilliantly through a series of switchbacks. If you do toggle the Dynamic Drive select switch, reflexes sharpen without ever becoming harsh.
When all left in Normal, the car cruises effortlessly and will shakedown at a moment’s notice. I, and the wife, loved the performance, styling, content and the fact that it effortlessly served our needs without being an SUV. In fact, my son even referred to it as “wagon de course.” To be fair, he also thinks our 2018 VW Golf Sportwagen is one as well but that just might be me influencing him …
All told, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC wagon is a dreamy machine. If I could, I really would.
