This is further proof that pickups need to do everything and well. The RAM 1500’s newly available Multifunction Tailgate adds greater utility for all truck purposes.
The 2019 RAM 1500’s Multifunction Tailgate can be configured in one of four ways: open flat, open left door only, open right door only and open both doors.
Each door swings open 88 degrees, enabling quicker access to the bed with a 60-40 split, swing-away functionality. The optional retractable centre-mounted step takes this accessibility to the next level. Despite these new functionalities, the tailgate retains its a 907 kg (2,000 lb) load rating.
It’s not all about getting to the bed’s contents however. The Multifunction Tailgate is trailer-friendly and does not require the trailer be removed before opening. In fact, you can open up the bed and tie down a trailer at the same time.
The Multifunction Tailgate will be optional on all of the RAM 1500’s seven models and will arrive in dealerships in the second quarter of 2019.
What’s the difference with GMC’s MultiPro Tailgate?
The 2019 GMC Sierra’s Multipro tailgate incorporates a load-stop feature which is more or less the equivalent of a bed extender for longer items. This same portion of the inner-gate can be folded down to gain closer access to the contents of the bed. The gate is lowered however so we still stand further away from the bed. With RAM, a bed-extender is an accessory and not part of the Multifunction Tailgate.
This same inner-gate converts into a step for easier ingress and egress into the bed. With the gate closed, the inner-gate can folded out once more increasing the length of the bed although higher off the bed floor. The load-stop can once more be used to prevent items from sliding out.
The RAM’s Multifunction Tailgate enables greater versatility and access to the bed while a trailer is attached. The Multipro Tailgate is an integrated bed-extender of which some features cannot be used when a trailer is present.
