This is the electric CUV we’ve been waiting for from Nissan for a while, and we like what we’re seeing.
Many have wondered when a fully-electric Nissan CUV/SUV would finally arrive. Revealed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, the Nissan Ariya Electric Crossover Concept is a strong hint at the future. While it isn’t exactly production ready but Yasuhiro Yamauchi, representative executive officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., said: “The Ariya Concept is not a concept car designed from far off ideas, but rather a car that embodies Nissan Intelligent Mobility at its core and highlights a promise of an entirely new driving experience on the horizon.”
This is good news in large part as not only does the Ariya look intensely good but the minimal specifications shared lead us to believe that Nissan should build this electric CUV yesterday. The shape is very sleek, fronted by the electrified V-motion signature fascia. The Ariya’s profile is more tall-5-door hatchback than SUV and we are fans of the large 5-spoke 21-inch wheels.
The cabin is vast, airy and quite minimalist. There are very few actual hard buttons along the dashboard which is highlighted by a lovely centrally located 12.3-inch screen. The extra thin seats free up visual and physical space, creating a large comfortable space for passengers.
The Nissan Ariya Electric Crossover Concept features ProPILOT 2.0 also enables hands-off driving while cruising in a given lane. The system engages the vehicle’s navigation system to help direct the car on a predefined route. With this technology, ProPILOT 2.0 can assist with passing, exiting and more on highways.
Powering the Ariya is a dual electric motor setup, one on each axle. This AWD configuration will provide ideal traction in all driving conditions. No word on range, actual power or battery size.
