Back in 1984, BMW launched the benchmark high-performance sedan, the M5. They are celebrating the birth of its legend with a 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years.
More specifically, the car is the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Jahre, which is “years” in German. The 1984 E28 BMW M5 is but one of BMW’s masterful strokes of performance engineering from the 80s. In the same decade, they destroyed all would-be competitors with the E30 BMW M3, the E24 BMW M6 and the now legendary M5.
The recipe was simple enough: drop the fabulous M1’s straight-6 3.5-litre engine under the bonnet and humiliate the competition, and most sports cars.
The celebrate the birth of the true sports sedan, BMW has revealed the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years which is based on none other than the M5 Competition. This includes the Comp’s twin-turbocharged V8 that is good for 617-horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque.
Given that the car is perfect mechanically, the upgrades for the 35th are only aesthetic. The shell is exclusively painted in matte Frozen Dark Grey II, the 20-inch are graphite grey 20-inch M wheels, the calipers are black instead of blue and best of all, BMW’s left the trunk unadorned. Yes, it’s de-badged.
The cabin features carbon fibre and gold anodized aluminum trim, M Sport seats and the new Live Cockpit Professional instrument panel display.
The car is not cheap as it is listed for just shy of $130k US. Of the 350 that will be built, 10% are on their way to the US. We have no specifics for Canada but if we do get some, it’ll likely be no more than a dozen and list price should hover somewhere around the $145k mark.
