2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE’s E-Active Body Quick Look

We expect a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle to pack quite a bit of nifty techno features. This is, after all, the company that engineered a safety system designed to protect your eardrums. It’s therefore not at all surprising that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE unveiled this week packs quite a few gadgets. One called E-Active Body caught our attention.

E-Active Body allows each wheel to function independently

E-Active Body is a hydropneumatic suspension system that forgoes anti-roll bars, thus giving each wheel complete and total independence from the others. The system can then adjust stiffness and spring rate in real time at each wheel in order to reduce body roll, improve off-road performance, and ultimately make the new 2020 GLE a better performer in any and every situation.

The system also allows the driver to adjust the ride height at each corner during off-road driving. Moreover, E-Active Body allows the 2020 GLE to adjust height and suspension settings as its cornering, effectively giving it the ability to lean into corners in order to counter body roll.

E-Active Body Control is powered by the GLE’s 48-volt electrical EQ Boost mild hybrid system found in the GLE 450 model, but it actually create power as well. Energy generated by the vehicle’s suspension movements can be recycled and used to supply the EQ Boost system.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE will be taking on some pretty tough competition when it launches next year. Features like E-Active Body Control are just what it needs to stand out.
