New 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Is Now More Than Ever The S-Class Of SUVs

More elegant, muscular and luxurious, the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS also gains in cabin volume to create the ultimate super SUV.

Launched back in 2006, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (old name) set a standard by which most other 3-row hyper-luxury SUVs were to be measured. Fast-forward 14 years and the arrival of numerous recent or new rivals and we find the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS back on top of the game.

The recipe for the new GLS is simple – take everything that makes the flagship S-Class great and apply it to the truck. One of them is an improvement in interior space. The new wheelbase is 2.4 inches (60 mm) longer which benefits overall space and comfort for passengers in the second row. According to Mercedes, occupants up to 6.4 feet/1.94 meters tall will be at ease – the seats are power adjustable and heated to boot.

The cabin is replete with luxury features in particular for those that will opt for the Executive Rear Seat Package. It includes a separate tablet to control all of the MBUX comfort and entertainment functions from the rear seats. For the first time, second row Captain’s Chairs are available as an option.

Also for the first time ever, Mercedes-Benz introduces a new powertrain in the GLS 580 4MATIC. It will feature an electrified V8 engine with EQ Boost which a 48-volt onboard electrical system with an integrated starter generator. This setup will produce 483-horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, with short boosts of 184 lb.-ft. of torque and 21-horsepower from the EQ.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 includes a straight-6 cylinder also with an electrified EQ Boost setup. This mill produces 362-horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, with the same short bursts of boost as the 580 powertrain.

Other standard features include AIRMATIC air suspension, a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and Benz’s 4MATIC AWD system. Optionally, E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension which, when combined with the AIRMATIC air suspension transforms the big truck into quite the capable handler. We look forward to finding out for ourselves.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS arrives by the end of the year.
