The Porsche Taycan 4S should be the most popular variant of the German brand’s new fully electric sedan, thanks to its more accessible price.
- $119,400 entry price in Canada
- Single-deck battery variant with 522 horsepower and a WLTP driving range of 407 km
- Two-deck battery variant with 563 horsepower and a WLTP driving range of 463 km.
The 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S made its auto show debut in Los Angeles today, after being revealed by the automaker back in October. Like the Turbo and Turbo S variants, the 4S is equipped with two electric motors and all-wheel drive, but with less power and torque.
The Taycan 4S is also available with one of two battery packs and outputs. The variant with the single-deck, 79.2-kWh battery pack produces 522 horsepower (390 kW, 530 PS) and delivers a range of 407 kilometres according to the WLTP. Porsche estimates its 0-100 km/h time at four seconds flat.
Equipped with the two-deck, 93.4-kWh Performance battery Plus, the 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S dishes out 563 horsepower (420 kW, 571 PS) for a 0-100 time of 4.0 seconds—or 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Driving range is set at a WLTP-defined 463 kilometres.
EPA and Natural Resources Canada range calculations haven’t yet been defined.
In comparison, the Taycan Turbo boasts 670 hp and a range of 450 km, while the Turbo S gets 750 ponies and a range of 412 km.
From an exterior design standpoint, there isn’t much here to differentiate a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S from the other variants, apart from a new bumper design in addition to 19-inch Taycan S aero wheels and red-painted brake callipers.
Inside, we get a partial leather interior, eight-way power-adjustable front seats and an infotainment system with a single 10.9-inch touchscreen. Environmentalists will be happy to know that a leather-free cockpit is also available.
The big difference is price. The Taycan 4S starts at CAD$119,400 in Canada before freight and delivery charges, making it much more affordable than the CAD$173,900 Turbo and CAD$213,900 Turbo S. It’s also in a price range that rivals the Tesla Model S, even though the latter has greater range. Meanwhile, the 4S debuts at USD$103,800 in the United States.
The first deliveries are scheduled for spring 2020 in the U.S. and summer in Canada.
