2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo Gets EPA Range of Only 201 Miles

The EPA’s fuel economy equivalent ratings also rank the Taycan dead last among EVs currently sold in the United States.

The Environmental Protection Agency just released the official drive range for the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo in the United States, and it’s not good.

The Taycan Turbo’s range has been set at 201 miles (322 kilometres), along with fuel economy equivalent ratings of 68 eMPG city, 71 eMPG highway, 69 eMPG combined. That EPA driving range pales in comparison to the car’s 281-mile (450-km) range established using the World Harmonised Light-vehicle Testing Procedure (WLTP), the standard in other parts of the world.

Obviously, the 201-mile is lower than what the EPA estimated for the Tesla Model S, whose range varies from 287 to 373 miles. Adding insult to injury, the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo’s eMPG figure is the worst among all electric vehicles currently sold in the U.S. market. Even the Audi e-tron quattro and the Jaguar I-PACE managed to post a higher average, which were also considered disappointments regarding energy consumption.

According to Jalopnik, Porsche decided to hire testing agency ACMI to perform independent “real-world” tests, who established a driving range of 275 miles (440 km).

Obviously, range numbers aren’t the only selling point for the 2020 Porsche Taycan, and the company already said numerous times that its goal wasn’t to out-range Tesla or any other EV manufacturer. Still, everybody was likely expecting a better result.

We’ll see if the EPA will update its eMPG and range numbers following the independent testing by Porsche, but it’s highly unlikely that will be the case, unless the automaker releases some sort of “software update” or other tweak in order to justify a new EPA test.

Meanwhile, Porsche has been offering three years of free charging through the Electrify America and Electrify Canada charging network. The Taycan can gather electrons at a rate of up to 270 kW, meaning extremely quick charge times. That is, if the station itself is also as capable.

If the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo’s 201-mile EPA range is underwhelming, the Taycan Turbo S and the 4S with the single-deck battery might barely break the 180-mile range level in the U.S. According to the WLTP, these two trim levels boast driving ranges of 412 and 407 km, respectively. Meanwhile, the Taycan 4S with the two-deck battery is rated at 463 km, slightly better than the Turbo’s range.
