With the mid-size pickup segment heating up, Toyota had to update its best-selling Tacoma. The refreshed pickup launched today at the Chicago Auto Show.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show isn’t a brand-new model, but it receives enough updates to remain competitive with the new Ford Ranger and upcoming Jeep Gladiator.
Notable improvements on the 2020 Tacoma include an upgraded infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and even Android Auto (a rare sight at Toyota).
The new Tacoma TRD Pro edition gets new 17-inch wheel design and a new grill for the TRD Sport. The TRD Off-Road model gets a sequential LED Headlight, Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential, Hill Assist Control (HAC), Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control.
2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro models also get an exclusive Army Green exterior color and a new Panoramic View Monitor and Multi Terrain Monitor that gives the driver the ability to select front, side, or rear views for better visibility on a narrow, off-road trail.
Standard four-wheel drive and electronically controlled locking rear differential are also included on the TRD Pro.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma will continue to be offered with two engine options: a base 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, and an available 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The V6 will still be paired with a six-speed manual if the owner wishes it, or a six-speed automatic.
Towing capacity remains at 6,800 pounds which is less than the what the Ford Ranger (7,500 pounds) can tow, but still quite useful.
Lastly, every 2020 Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense P which features radar-based adaptive cruise control, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, automatic headlights and lane departure warning with automatic steering assist. In terms of safety, no other mid-size pickup can match what the Toyota offers standard.
Visually and mechanically, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma remains roughly the same despite a few modifications here and there. Where it improves tremendously, is in the tech department.
Official pricing and Canadian specs will be unveiled at a later date.
