The 2021 Lexus ES is available with AWD.
ES 250 AWD is equipped with a 203-horsepower, 2.5L engine.
ES 350 Black Line Special Edition also new for the 2021 model year.
The 2021 Lexus ES will offer an all-wheel drivetrain and a new Black Line Special Edition variant, expanding the midsize luxury sedan’s appeal in foul weather and seeking to gain even more sportiness.
In addition to the ES 350 and the hybrid ES 300h, the model range will now include the ES 250 AWD. It’s equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 203 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Like many reactive systems out there, the AWD setup feeds all of the engine’s power to the front wheels under normal driving conditions, but can reassign up to 50 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels when slippage occurs or when accelerating from a standstill.
The 2021 Lexus ES AWD is said to deliver a city/highway combined fuel economy rating of 28 mpg in the U.S., and 8.4 L/100 km in Canada. The brand points out that trunk volume and cabin space are unaffected by the new hardware, just like cabin quietness, ride quality and handling.
Meanwhile, the ES 350 keeps its 302-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine, good for a combined rating of 26 mpg or 9.1 L/100 km. The ES 300h’s hybrid powertrain summons up a combined 215 horsepower and allows for a combined rating of 44 mpg or 5.3 L/100 km.
Also new is the ES 350 Black Line Special Edition, which will be available in limited quantities—1,500 units in the United States, and an undisclosed amount in Canada that we estimate at 100 to 200 units. This version is based on the F SPORT package and will offer a choice of three paint colours: Ultrasonic Mica Blue 2.0, Ultra White and Obsidian, although Canada won’t be getting the latter. Black mirror caps, dark F SPORT wheels and a black trunklid spoiler complete the exterior design changes, while the cabin will boast a black-and-white interior with gray contrast stitching.
But that’s not all. The 2021 Lexus ES Black Line Special Edition also includes a Zero Halliburton two-piece set of travel cases from its Edge Lightweight Collection. The 22-inch Continental Carry-On and 26-inch Medium Travel Case are both black with chrome laser-etched logos.
Pricing for the Canadian market isn’t available yet, but the 2021 Lexus ES will start at $40,925 in the U.S., and that’s for both the ES 250 AWD and the ES 350. the ES 300h will be listed at $42,835, while the ES 350 Black Line Special Edition will cost $47,575. The ES will go on sale across both countries in the fall of 2020, and will once again compete with the Acura TLX, the Cadillac CT5 and the Chrysler 300, among others.
