The 2021 Lexus IS will go on sale this fall, and the luxury brand has just announced pricing for the Canadian market.
The compact sports luxury sedan rides on the same platform as before, but gains all-new sheetmetal that more closely resembles the company’s newer products, such as the midsize Lexus ES and full-size Lexus LS sedans. Wheelbase is obviously unchanged, while overall length increases by 1.2 inches (30 millimetres), width grows by 1.2 inches (30 mm) and roofline height rises marginally.
The 2021 Lexus IS 300 will feature a rear-wheel drivetrain along with a turbocharged, 2.0L four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup delivers 241 horsepower as well as 258 pound-feet of torque from 1,650 to 4,400 rpm. The IS 300 AWD gets a naturally aspirated, 3.5L V6 that develops 260 horsepower and 236 pound-feet, matched to a six-speed automatic. Its full-time all-wheel drivetrain has a 30/70 front/rear torque split under normal driving conditions, but can shift up to 50% of available power to the front wheels when the going gets rough.
The IS 350 AWD’s 3.5L V6 generates 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet, also managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. The company claims the most potent 2021 Lexus IS can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 96 km/h) in 5.7 seconds.
F SPORT packages can be added to the IS as well, which includes 19-inch alloy wheels (up from the standard 18-inchers), 265/35R19 rear tires, a specific exhaust tip, a rear bumper diffuser, a cool air intake and a sound generator to fill the cockpit with racier engine revs. The F SPORT ensembles also boast heated and ventilated sport seats with optional Circuit Red upholstery as well as unique interior trim. A Dynamic Handling Package can be piled on, too, which features an adaptive variable suspension, lighter 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels with a matte black finish and—in the case of the F SPORT Series 3 with Dynamic Handling Package on the IS 350 AWD—carbon-fibre rear spoiler and mirror caps.
Actually, the IS 300 RWD rolls into Canada with the F SPORT Series 1 package fitted as standard, while the IS 300 AWD is available with F SPORT Series 1 and Series 2 setups. The IS 350 AWD can be had in F SPORT Series 2 or F SPORT Series 3 trim only.
Inside, the 2021 Lexus IS comes standard with a revised infotainment system, including an eight-inch touchscreen which sits 80 mm closer to the driver for easier access. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard as well, while a 10.3-inch screen is optional, as is a new 1,800-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.
Finally, Lexus Safety Sense 2.5, or LSS+ 2.5, is a new addition for 2021. It rounds up forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, all-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and lane tracing assist. Automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are also standard.
The rear-wheel-drive 2021 Lexus IS 300 starts at $42,950 before freight and delivery charges, which is $2,100 cheaper than the 2020 edition with the F SPORT package. Meanwhile, the IS 300 AWD is listed at $43,400, and the range-topping IS 350 AWD retails from $53,300.
