2021 Ram 1500 HFE EcoDiesel Is A Highway Fuel Miser

Choose your colour: white or black.

  • The 2021 Ram 1500 HFE EcoDiesel nets 33 mpg or 7.1 L/100 km on the highway.

  • Priced at $43,935 in the United States; Canadian pricing not yet announced.

  • Available in Tradesman Crew Cab trim with 4×2 drivetrain only.

A new edition of the 2021 Ram pickup truck has been introduced, and it’s the brand’s most fuel-efficient configuration in the North American lineup. Called the Ram 1500 HFE EcoDiesel, this new trim level boasts a highway fuel economy rating of 33 mpg in the U.S., and 7.1 L/100 km in Canada.

Equipped with the turbo-diesel 3.0L V6 that develops 260 horsepower as well as 480 pound-feet of torque, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Ram 1500 Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel is also rated at 23 mpg or 10.4 L/100 km in the city, for a combined average of 26 mpg or 8.9 L/100 km. It’s worth noting that this fuel-mising edition rides on a 4×2 drivetrain, which is better suited to the southern states than the snowbelt region of the U.S. and Canada.

Also, the Ram 1500 HFE is only marginally more efficient than the other trim levels of the pickup with the EcoDiesel engine underhood. In contrast, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4×2 with its 3.0L turbo-diesel inline six is rated at 23/33/27 mpg in the U.S., and at 10.2/7.2/8.8 L/100 km. So, both pickups are pretty close on the efficiency front.

The Ram 1500 Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel is offered in crew cab, short bed configuration and is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels, a black bumper and grille, a tonneau cover, side steps and cloth upholstery. A modified tonneau, low rolling-resistance tires and a more aerodynamic front air dam explain the fuel economy gain. Only two paint colors are available: Bright White Clear Coat and Diamond Black Crystal, further proving its utilitarian mission.

Base price for the 2021 Ram 1500 HFE EcoDiesel is set at $43,935 including freight and delivery charges in the United States, while Canadian pricing has yet to be announced. It’s scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2021.

The diesel-powered HFE contrasts sharply with the other recent addition to the pickup truck’s lineup, namely the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX that flaunts a 702-horsepower, supercharged 6.2L V8.
