New high-performance Ram TRX will take on the Ford Raptor
Teaser makes it sound like a 6.2-litre Hellcat V8 could be under the hood
2021 Ram TRX coming this summer
Rumors of a high-performance Ram 1500 truck have been around for a while, and today the company confirmed a 2021 Ram TRX truck was coming this summer.
The TRX model dates back to 2016 when a concept of a high-performance Ram Rebel (pictured above) surfaced.
Like with any good teaser, we couldn’t see the TRX at all as it was hidden by a large cloud of dust and sand. But more important that what the teaser showed or didn’t show is what we can hear. That’s the unmistakable sound of FCA’s 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 otherwise known as Hellcat.
The Hellcat is a monster with 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. There’s an even more powerful version with 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque that powers the Challenger Hellcat Redeye.
Ram hasn’t given us any specs to go on, but we know the TRX will take on the Ford F-150 Raptor in the narrow performance truck segment. The Raptor pushes out 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, so in theory it would be no match for the TRX if a Hellcat is lurking underneath.
Ram could be benchmarking the Dodge RAM SRT 10 of the early 2000s that packed a Viper V10 with 500 horsepower. That truck remains to this day the most powerful full-size truck ever built, and a Hellcat-powered TRX would be a worthy successor.
We will know more this summer. Ram hasn’t specified a date just yet, but given that we are essentially in summer already, we shouldn’t have to wait long.
