The Tesla Model Y crossover came very close to winning the title of best-selling vehicle in California last year. The popular electric SUV finished second in sales with 60,394 units, according to statistics collected by the CNCDA (for California New Car Dealers Association). It was the Toyota Camry, with 61,599 units of the midsize sedan that took the title of best-selling car in the southern U.S. state.
This sales statistic for the Model Y is even more impressive when you consider that the electric model surpassed the popular – and affordable – Honda Civic last year, the compact car that sold 59,918 units. We’re talking about the best-selling car in Canada for more than two decades, and a model that’s still very popular in the U.S., with more than 47,000 units sold in the last quarter of 2021 across the U.S., slightly more than the Japanese compact’s total annual sales in Canada in 2021.
During the same period, the Tesla Model Y sold just over 40,000 units in the U.S., a statistic that demonstrates California drivers’ interest in more fuel-efficient vehicles. What’s more, Tesla was born in California, notably at the Fremont plant where the brand’s four models are still assembled.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Model 3, Tesla’s other more affordable vehicle, ranked fifth in California sales last year with no less than 53,572 units, demonstrating the strength of this automotive division in its birthplace. In fourth place is a certain Toyota RAV4, the Japanese SUV that also overtook the Honda Civic in Canada.
In light of these numbers, it would be surprising if the Tesla Model Y wasn’t at the top of California sales in 2022. Let’s just say it would take quite a turnaround for the electric crossover not to surpass the Toyota Camry or even the Toyota RAV4 – which is selling very well – by the end of the year.
