The Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen was a car that needed only to be given half a chance to impress. Sadly, blinded by SUVs, North America will never be graced with the 8th generation Golf save for the GTI and Golf R. The greatest of all Golfs is the wagon, or estate, and Volkswagen has just introduced it.
Station wagons are, like SUVs, about utility, they only happen to look sleeker and generally drive better, by I digress. The latest Golf Estate is 66mm longer than the previous car, most of the extra length is in the wheelbase. This translates into more rear legroom and extra cargo room.
But beyond the versatility, the new Golf wagon is beautiful, extremely urban and modern. The roofline slopes downward towards the steeply raked hatch for a near quasi coupe-like, for a wagon, profile. The Alltrack, with VW’s 4MOTION AWD, has consequently evolved into a more upscale crossover-like vehicle, trading some visual ruggedness for a little more panache.
The new Golf Estate will be offered with a number of powertrain options and the devilishly cool Golf R wagon will likely return. The Golf wagon will never return to North America.
