Redline will be 9,000 rpm.
Horsepower will be 625.
Performance will be extreme.
The all-new C8 Chevrolet Corvette has become the sports car of the year. GM’s not taken this momentum lightly as they’ve already announced details and pricing for the 2021 car. Now, we await the performance versions. The first to surface is the Z06 and the details are enticing.
Hints as to which engine was to power the C8 Z06 have circulated for a while and now we have confirmation. The C8.R race car’s 5.5-litre flat-plane twin-cam V8 will do the job of getting the new Z06 up to speed. MotorTrend says it will produce 625 horsepower and well over 400 lb.-ft. of torque, closer to 485 lb.-ft.
Many Vette enthusiasts will decry that these numbers are down on the C7 Z06’s 650 horsepower and equal torque but Chevrolet won’t let you down. The engine’s redline will be set at 9,000 rpm meaning it will be a screamer and likely a far more involving and driver-involving car.
Looking ahead, the ZR1 version will likely see two turbochargers added to the 5.5-litre V8 for a total of about 800 horsepower. A hybrid version is expected with at least 1,000 horsepower and it should be known as the Zora, for the father of the Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov.
