2022 Genesis G70 is technically a refresh, but it looks brand-new
Engine lineup remains unchanged
Interior gets more tech and larger screen
Genesis has a lot going on right now with two new models launched last year, a new model coming this year, and a revamp of its Genesis G70 for 2022.
Although the Genesis GV80 and G80 introduced in 2021 have given the brand a huge boost of visibility, the G70 and the upcoming GV70 are the keys to Genesis’ long-term growth. The compact segment, be it compact sedans like the G70 or compact SUVs like the GV70, are where a luxury automaker makes the better portion of its income.
We were given the opportunity to have a look up close at both the all-new 2022 Genesis GV70 which we detail in a separate article, and the refreshed 2022 G70 recently, and the overall impression that we came away with is that Genesis looks like it knows what it is doing.
The new Genesis GV70 isn’t a redesign, it’s a refresh. You wouldn’t know it, however, when seeing it in person. It looks like a smaller Genesis G80, although it is still distinctive enough that it is quickly recognizable. And it looks really good as you can see in the pictures below.
Inside, there’s a larger centre touchscreen (10.3 inches vs 8.0 inches in the previous model) and a new infotainment system that is less Hyundai, more Genesis. There are more interior finish and combinations available as well.
Powering the 2022 Genesis G70 is an unchanged lineup of two engines. The first, a turbocharged 2.0-litre, delivers 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The other, a 3.3-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder, offers 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.
Without having yet driven the new Genesis G70, we can surmise that this is a much better looking, more distinctive version of an already very good car. Genesis certainly bought the G70 a few more years before an all-new model arrives in a couple of years.
