2023 Acura MDX Review: Neither Green nor Efficient

The Acura MDX is nice however it can't compete with the BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE.

  • The 2024 Acura MDX 2024 starts at $65,890.

  • It is powered by a 3.5 L V6 engine.

  • A more powerful Type S version is also available.

In 2022, Acura renewed the MDX and introduced the fourth generation of its three-row midsize luxury SUV. Since then, it has remained unchanged. This winter, on the roads of the greater Montreal region, we put the Acura MDX 2023 through its paces. Here’s a full summary of our impressions.

A V6 engine we still love

Under the hood of the Acura MDX 2023, the recipe is quite simple. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is well known to both Honda and Acura. It produces 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. This unit is married to a ten-speed automatic transmission. This engine works wonderfully well, and it’s no coincidence that it has built up such a reputation over the years. The MDX certainly isn’t a rocket, but the powertrain’s self-confidence makes it a definite pleasure to drive. In fact, Acura has succumbed to the industry trend of downsizing and compensating, not always skilfully or brilliantly, with turbocharging.

On the other hand, let’s face it, the MDX isn’t the most fuel-efficient SUV we’ve tested. At the end of our time behind the wheel, the trip computer read 13.7 L/100 km. Natural Resources Canada, meanwhile, claims a combined driving rating of 11.2 L/100 km. Realistically, it will be difficult to go below 13 L/100 km. On another note, we think it’s a shame that Acura doesn’t offer an electrified version of its biggest SUV. Indeed, we recall that the Japanese brand offered a hybrid version of the MDX a few years ago. Despite mixed success at the time, such a version would attract its fair share of buyers today.

All versions feature the efficient SH-AWD four-wheel drive system.

A more powerful Type S

Performance enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that there is a Type S version of the MDX. This more powerful version is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. It develops 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. This model features adaptive dampers, 21-inch wheels and Brembo brakes.

Obviously, it’s not quite up to the level of a BMW X5 M or a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S. The good news is that it will cost you several tens of thousands of dollars less.

A touchpad that will make you lose your patience

Like us, you’ll no doubt be disappointed when you climb aboard the MDX to find that the 12.3-inch infotainment system screen isn’t touch-sensitive. In 2024, this seems inconceivable to us. The engineers chose a touchpad instead. It represents a real irritant and could definitely be a reason not to buy the product. The system is unnecessarily complex and could not be less intuitive. What a bad idea!

Otherwise, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also right in front of the driver’s eyes. Information is easy to consult.

How much does the Acura MDX 2024 cost?

The Acura MDX Tech 2024 starts at $65,890. For an A-Spec version, whose trim seems more elegant and sober due to its absence of chrome, you’ll pay $68,890. Finally, a Platinum Elite version will set you back $72,890. Finally, the Type S version is priced at $88,390.

The Acura MDX is in an uncomfortable position. It’s caught between two chairs. A bit like the Infiniti QX60, but to a lesser extent. Its approach is certainly a little luxurious and it plays the premium card, but it can’t compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5, which are in a different class. On the other side of the spectrum, Kia offers a Telluride with an entry price of $53,666.50. The top-of-the-range X-Pro will set you back $66,366.50. So even the best-equipped Telluride will cost you less than an MDX. It’s up to you to decide whether the MDX’s slim added value and low-gloss badge will tip the scales in its favor.

7 occupants

As a three-row midsize luxury SUV, the Acura MDX can accommodate up to seven occupants. It’s worth noting that space and clearance in the third row are limited, and access can be difficult. What’s more, with the third bench seat in place, cargo volume is greatly reduced. Think of it as a booster seat when you need it. If you need to move six or seven occupants on a regular basis, a minivan or full-size SUV will be more practical for you.

Otherwise, the Acura MDX shines in comfort. Both in the front and second rows, you’ll feel comfortable and ready to cover several hundred kilometers without fear.

In a nutshell

All in all, the Acura MDX 2023 isn’t very distinctive. It offers nothing more or less than its competitors. It’s about average. Its V6 engine is powerful and smooth. On the other hand, the infotainment system’s touchpad is a real irritant.
