New compact crossover will come with PHEV driveline
First new car to offer an NFT as part of purchase
A new Alfa Romeo crossover is here. The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is the brand’s first electrified model and its second crossover. The compact cute-ute will also be the first new car to be sold with an NFT, which will certainly excite dozens of people.
Two powertrains will be offered in North America, with the highlight the new PHEV driveline. That one gets a 180 hp 1.3L four driving the front wheels and a 121 hp electric motor on the back. Combine the two and you get 272 hp and all-wheel drive, with a 15.5 kWh battery offering a range estimate of 48 km.
The other option is a 2.0L turbo-four paired with a nine-speed automatic. Alfa says the 2023 Tonale’s 256 hp and 295 lb-ft will be the highest in class, and it will be equipped with start-stop engine tech.
Interior highlights include a stunning cabin, with a 12.3-inch digital dash which includes a custom 1960’s-look gauge layout as one of the options. The 10.25-inch center screen runs Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 platform giving it enhanced over the air update capability. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and charging are all standard with Amazon Alexa included.
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will have the usual suite of driver aids, with most standard. Traffic Jam Assist Level 2 autonomy will be optional.
Alfa puts a strong emphasis on driving dynamics, hyping its direct steering and Integrated Brake System (linking stability control and brake actuators more closely). It will also have frequency selective damping as standard with dual stage valve active suspension an option.
Alfa Romeo is also hyping the 2023 Tonale as being the first new vehicle with a built-in NFT. The non-fungible token is meant to be a secured and verifiable way to track service history and mileage and is stored in the Tonale. It will not serve as proof of ownership or come with any artwork.
Orders open at the end of the year, with deliveries starting Q1 of 2023. The Tonale will be offered in Sprint, Ti, and Veloce trim levels, with Sprint and Veloce for Canada.
