The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 starts at $67,550 in the United States and at $84,150 in Canada, freight and delivery charges included.
Output temporarily climbs from 429 to 483 horsepower with the Electrified GV70’s Boost Mode activated.
Driving range is rated at 236 miles on a full charge in the USA, and at 383 km in Canada.
The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 is the Korean luxury brand’s latest all-electric offering, building on the success and praise of the gasoline-powered Genesis GV70, but with a zero-emissions demeanour.
The Electrified GV70 was among the vehicles entered in this year’s AJAC EcoRun, a yearly event aiming to promote the benefits of eco-driving and highlight the fuel or energy efficiency of a select number of vehicles on the market. This year’s EcoRun started in Vancouver and ended in Kelowna, British Colombia, with a swing through Kamloops, and about 20 Canadian automotive journalists were also present and accounted for, with the opportunity to each drive 10 vehicles during the trip.
One of those 10 I drove was the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 compact luxury crossover. I was impressed with the ICE GV70 I drove a while back, and was looking forward to seeing what the electric variant had on tap. It’s equipped with front and rear electric motors creating an all-wheel drivetrain, as well as a 77.4 kWh battery pack, with total output pegged at 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A Boost Mode can be activated for 10-second bursts of extra power—483 horses, to be exact. The automaker claims a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 4.2 seconds, while some automotive publications recorded an even quicker time with their own instrumented testing.
On a compatible DC fast charger, the battery pack can be replenished at a speed of up to 350 kW. At a transfer rate of 250 kW, Genesis says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes, or about 73 minutes at a rate of 50 kW. On a 240V charging station, it takes about 7 hours to fill the battery from 10% to 100% capacity. Driving range on a full charge at rated at 236 miles in the U.S. and at 383 kilometres in Canada.
Crunching more numbers, the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 boasts city/highway/combined energy efficiency ratings of 34.3/40.4/37.0 kWh/100 miles, or 21.3/25.1/23.0 kWh/100 km.
During my time aboard the electric GV70 at EcoRun, I managed an average of 25.6 kWh/100 miles or 15.9 kWh/100 km, well below the official ratings. One of my colleagues obtained an even lower result on a mostly downhill drive leg, while most drivers ended up with an average ranging from 23.0 to 26.2 kWh/100 miles or 14.3 to 16.3 kWh/100 km.
Average (kWh/100 miles) | Average (kWh/100 km) | Range Projection (miles) | Range Projection (km) | |
Best average | 18.5 | 11.5 | 418 | 673 |
My average | 25.6 | 15.9 | 302 | 487 |
Worst average | 38.1 | 23.7 | 203 | 327 |
The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 loses nothing with regard to design, fit and finish and versatility compared to the gas-powered GV70. It can also tow up to 3,500 pounds or 1,588 kilograms, so no change there either. Actually, cargo space is down just a smidge, from 28.9 to 28.7 cubic feet or 818 to 813 litres with the rear seats in place, and from 56.9 to 56.5 cubic feet or 1,611 to 1,600 litres with the seatbacks folded. We need the spec sheet to figure this difference out.
In the U.S., the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 starts at $67,550 in base Advanced trim and at $74,350 in Prestige trim. The Canadian market only gets the loaded Prestige variant, priced at $84,150. All aforementioned prices include freight and delivery charges.
In short, the Electrified GV70 offers impressive performance, a well-appointed cabin and plenty of features, while its emissions-free powertrain can be even more efficient with a little eco-driving—when we’re not having fun with the Boost Mode activated, of course.
