2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 Review: It’s Got Everything Going for it

The Genesis Electrified GV70 outguns and out-manoeuvres the vast majority of all EVs in its price range

2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 Pros:

– The Electrified GV70 is the most appealing EV under $100,000.

– It’s luxurious, quiet, fast, and efficient.

– For about $85,000, no other premium SUV delivers as much of everything.

2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 Cons:

– Despite being this good, leasing the GV70 is the only way to get one.

In 2023, shopping for an electrified vehicle is automatic, as is considering an SUV. In today’s world, luxury is another must. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric, many automakers provide alternatives and I’m here to say that the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 is with little hesitation one of your best option.

Frankly, this electric SUV has so much going for it that even its sorest point, its range, practically registers as just another feature. With an estimated 383-km range thanks to its decent-sized 77.4-kWh battery, the Electrified GV70 remains competitive to an extent. Comparing to a Tesla Model Y, it’s not a selling point. Compared to a far-less-powerful nearly-as-pricey not-quite-as-luxurious fully loaded Audi Q4, it’s on par. But where performance is concerned, there are no comparisons to be made.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 comes exclusively in a dual motor layout, mirroring other Hyundai Motor Group EVs that are based on the E-GMP platform. Like the GV60 Performance variant, the GV70 boasts a commendable 429 hp and a staggering 516 lb.-ft. of torque. When the “BOOST” function is activated, the powertrain is capable of summoning an extra 54 horsepower for a ten-second interval, leading to exhilarating acceleration. Turning on the BOOST function allows the crossover, starting from a complete stop, to complete the 0-100km/h dash in roughly 4 seconds, frequently resulting in mild 4-wheel spin and a mischievous grin on my face.

The Electrified GV70’s performance is also measured by its ability to quickly recharge. Like other Hyundai Motor Group E-GMP EVs, this premium SUV is capable of 350kW fast charging which allows the battery to replenish its charge from 10% to 80% in an estimated 18 minutes or achieve a range extension of over 100 km in just five minutes, given ideal circumstances. This final point is crucial. Over my multiple EGM-P review experiences, despite various conditions and pre-conditioning, I’ve never surpassed the 225kW mark despite being plugged into a 350kW charger. Even so, I peaked at just shy of 185kW which handily bests many EVs maximum capabilities. Truthfully though, it is frustrating to never experience max power.

Another item that weighs heavily in the GV70’s favour is its advanced electronically controlled suspension with road preview. This setup uses self-regulating dampers that harness data from the front camera and the navigation system to proactively fine-tune the damping force. In essence, these dampers are outstanding, consistently achieving the ideal balance between ride comfort and maneuverability.

Regular GV70?

Most will think so. And for this, I really like the GV70 Electrified. Unless you’ve studied the GV70 in minute detail, there’s no telling them apart other than the Electrified’s full front grille, the absence of a fuel door, unique 20-inch wheels, and that’s about it. In fact, the charge port is perfectly integrated into the front shield making it largely invisible. It also creates a problem in winter – you’ll see.

Inside the cabin, passengers are greeted by craftsmanship, the finest materials, and attention to detail. As there is only one trim in Canada, the Genesis GV70’s interior exudes luxury with quilted Nappa leather that feels heavenly, complemented by suede accents and headliner, and the fit and finish are top-tier. Genesis doesn’t compromise on features either as it is also equipped with cooled extra-comfortable front seats, a 12.3-inch digital IP, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, heads-up display, heat pump, a Lexicon premium audio system, and more.

The controls, menus, and ergonomics are intuitive and generally simple. The small-ish HVAC display requires extra attention but it’s not a deal-breaker.

This is where you should shop

Shop for a lease, more specifically. Compared to anything currently available and soon to be offered, for $85,000, the Genesis stacks up wonderfully against the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQB, Lexus RZ 450e, and others. Realistically, the GV70 happens to be a perfect middle ground among the group when it comes to purchase considerations.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 is a truly impressive and luxurious EV that cannot disappoint, and will not.
