2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 4MATIC SUV Review: Near Peak Premium Electric SUV For Now…

The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is far more appealing visually and as a whole than the EQE sedan

Mercedes-Benz EVs, in my experience, have taken me from the depths of disappointment to the peaks of pleasure. This tale, however, centers around a model that, at the very least, met my expectations and in some ways surpassed them in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is interesting.

My initial foray into Mercedes’ electric offerings began with the EQS 4MATIC sedan, a vehicle that, despite its prowess in performance, left much to be desired in almost every other aspect. So much so, that the subsequent EQS SUV didn’t even pique my interest. The EQB, with its charm and minor flaws, and the EQE 4MATIC sedan, with its worthy attributes albeit questionable styling, paved the way for my desire to review the EQE SUV and I’m glad I have.

Not white

The EQE SUV’s appreciable styling, a vast improvement over its sedan counterpart, is significantly more appealing. Its extended and elevated roofline presents a silhouette that’s both commanding and elegant, avoiding the overstretched, squashed-egg aesthetic that plagues the EQE sedan. Measuring an imposing 4.9 meters in length with a wheelbase stretching over 3 meters, the EQE SUV is a colossus that somehow manages to maintain an air of compact grace.

Personally, Polar white is a poor colour choice for the EQE and EQS models due to the stark contrast with the gloss black front “grille”. Nearly all other available shades dull the juxtaposition especially on the sedan which suffers from a pinched front fascia that makes everything worse.

The vehicle’s cabin is a sanctuary of luxury and technology, with the Hyperscreen dashboard offering an expanse of digital real estate that’s both awe-inspiring and overwhelming. Despite the screen looking sharp with a truly high-end display, its sheer size and angle create reflections that distract, as if the sustained barrage of information wasn’t distracting enough. Nice touches include the 64 shades of ambient lighting and the immense vastness of the occupant quarters.

The sumptuous leather seats are as comfortable as they look, and the driving position is excellent as is visibility. Oddly, the heated seats are invariably linked with the heated steering wheel which seems like a lazy programming decision. Otherwise, the near-endless array of convenience features ensure that every journey is enveloped in comfort and class.

500

My encounter was with the EQE, a 500 model, delivered the performance I was expecting. As standard, the EQE SUV is equipped with dual electric motors. The 500 is served by 402 horsepower and a staggering 633 lb-ft of torque. Despite its hefty 5,300-pound frame, the EQE SUV’s performance is nothing short of exhilarating. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is accomplished in a mere 4.9 seconds. The inclusion of four-wheel steering, with the rear wheels capable of a 10-degree turn, endows the EQE SUV with a nimbleness that belies its size, making tight parking maneuvers and sharp turns a breeze.

Although the tested model was not fitted with the must-have optional Airmatic suspension, ride quality is exceptional and refined while steering assistance is well-judged and progressive. Unfortunately, no vehicle is without its flaws. The EQE SUV’s regenerative braking system, with its peculiar pedal movement where it moves when activated, still requires some getting used-to even after a few days.

Mercedes-Benz rates the EQE 500 SUV’s range at an estimated 433 km, which can be considered adequate. However, in colder temperatures, the best indicated range I noted after a full overnight charge was of 343 km. With a 90.6 kWh battery pack and with a starting price of $105,000, this is unacceptable. Furthermore, the 170 kW fast-charging capability is tolerable but it pales in comparison to the rapid charging rates boasted by some competitors. Benz estimates a 32-minute charging time for a 10-80% charge.

Wait or lease for a few years

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 4MATIC SUV represents an interesting offering in the premium electric vehicle landscape. It encapsulates the luxury and innovation synonymous with Mercedes-Benz however, and this applies to all EVs, it’s going to get better.

If there’s one reason to not buy an EQ, as opposed to lease, it’s the fact that Mercedes-Benz will be changing its naming structure in 2024 and with it, we expect new models, improved technology, and performance, and more than likely, enhanced styling.

Options to consider, for a lease, are the Cadillac Lyriq, Tesla Model Y or X, Audi Q6 and Q8 e-tron, BMW iX, and less than a handful of others.
