With the new 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV unveiled tonight in California, Chevrolet is offering a new electric SUV with a familiar name.
When Chevrolet decided to bring back the Blazer name to its lineup a few years ago, the move was met with a barrage of criticism. In fact, the brand’s purists would have liked a model that paid homage to the past, an SUV with retro styling and whose prerogative would have been off-road driving.
Of course, we know what happened. The new-generation Blazer wasn’t anything like that and as expected, many were upset. But as is usually the case in situations like this, people got over it and as expected, complaints about the Blazer’s new design and vocation slowly dwindled away. And now, five years later, we get the new Chevrolet Blazer EV, further distancing the Blazer name from the original model, and yet taking the famed Chevy SUV into an intriguing new world.
That’s the context in which the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV was unveiled tonight in Los Angeles.
Ultium Platform for the 2024 Blazer EV
Let’s start with the base, literally, the Ultium platform that General Motors (GM) has been promising for a while now. It’s starting to appear and will be used for many electric products, including the new Blazer EV. One of its strengths is its modularity, which allows designers to offer a wide range of configurations, both in terms of drivetrains and driving range.
Not everything has been revealed about the electric motors, their respective capacities and the battery format. Considering that the model will not appear for another year, we guess that changes are always possible. Nevertheless, we were given a good overview of the lineup with a few goodies to get excited about.
For example, we know that an SS version will be offered, making the Chevrolet Blazer EV a true electric performance SUV. At least that’s GM’s promise, with a claimed 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque, enough to reach 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.
WOW mode
To unleash the full power of the Blazer SS, a WOW mode will be offered, for Wide Open Watts. Move over Ludicrous, this is now the coolest driving mode name in the business.
Otherwise, we’re also promised a version capable of travelling some 515 kilometres (320 miles) in all-electric mode with the rear-wheel-drive RS trim. As for recharging, we’re told that the Blazer EV will have a capacity of 11.5 kW for Level 2 home charging stations and a maximum capacity of 190 kW with fast DC charging stations. The latter will add 125 kilometres (78 miles) in just 10 minutes.
Interestingly, the Blazer EV will be offered in three powertrain configurations, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
The versions
Where Chevrolet’s plans are clearer is when it comes to the definition of the range. There will be four versions of the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer EV: 1LT, 2LT, RS and SS. How will each be offered in terms of drivetrain and range capabilities? That remains to be seen. We know that a rear-wheel-drive RS will be offered, and that the SS model will have four wheels that grip the pavement. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait and see.
Chevy has also confirmed a version designed for law enforcement, the PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle), which will be available in the summer of 2023, before the consumer version goes on sale.
Equipment
In terms of features, we don’t have all of the details yet. However, we know that a massive 17.7-inch touchscreen will dominate the dashboard and offer the latest connectivity features. The Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system will be available with some versions and on RS and SS models, an LED light animation will be activated when approaching or moving away from the vehicle.
2024 Chevy Blazer Pricing
Pricing has already been announced. The new 2024 Chevy Blazer EV will start at $54,548 (1LT version). The 2LT model will be available from $59,148, the RS version from $63,848, while the SS performance livery will start at $83,548. Prices include shipping and preparation fees of $2,200.
In the U.S., pricing starts at approximately $45,995 for the 1LT, at $47,595 for the 2LT and at $51,995 for the RS before adding the destination freight charge. The SS will be priced from $65,995.
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer will arrive in dealerships next summer.
