2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Gets ZR2 Off-Road Treatment

This off-roader can tow up to 18,500 lbs

  • The ZR2 that will tow your house

  • Biggest ZR2 yet gets nearly all the off-road goodies

Things just got heavy at Chevrolet. The brand’s ZR2 off-road trim is now available on the HD version of the Silverado, with the Silverado HD ZR2 getting the line’s signature Multimatic DSSV dampers,

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 will be offered exclusively on the 2500-spec truck and only with a crew cab. Sorry, no off-road dually-ing. At least not yet.

Like any good off-road package, this one starts with a lift. The Silverado HD will be about 1.5 inches taller thanks to that factory lift kit. The suspension changes will include new upper and lower control arms in the front as well as ZR2-specific steering knuckles. 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires are mounted on 18-inch wheels.

Other changes include a bigger steel skid plate for the transfer case and an aluminum one up front. The rear diff will also be an electronic locker for traction in really tough conditions. Unlike other ZR2s, there is no front locker here.

The magic, though, is the DSSV shocks. The spool valve dampers are used on race cars on pavement and in the desert. As well as fast Camaros and the Colorado and Silverado 1500 ZR2s. On the HD truck, they have three spools that should help the big pickup handle the rough stuff.

Chevy is offering the HD ZR2 with its 6.6L gas V8 or the same-size Duramax diesel. The gasser makes 401 hp just like in other HD trucks and the diesel makes 470 hp with 975 lb-ft of torque. Both get a 10-speed automatic.

Payload and towing are affected by the off-road bits, but not by much. Max payload is 3,397 lbs with the gas engine, or about 10 lbs less than the non-ZR2. Max towing comes with the diesel at 18,500 lbs, 3,100 lbs less than the standard truck.

Chevrolet will also offer a Bison version, in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles. The HD AEV gets unique 18-inch wheels as well as stamped steel bumpers with cut-outs for better off-road angles as well as recovery points. There are more underbody skidplates, too, including coverage for the steering rack and exhaust.

Chevy says this one is for buyers who need to do tough work during the week and then want to head off-road for the weekend. Or who want to bring a hefty camper with them to the start of their favourite trail. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 starts production later this summer and should be at dealers in Q3 of this year.
