After revealing the brand-new fully electric 2024 Kia EV9 two weeks ago, Kia has now provided more information on specs and electric range
The 2024 Kia EV9 will offer up to 540 km of range on WLTP cycle
In its most powerful version, it will reach 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds
Kia has confirmed a more powerful GT model is in the work
The 2024 Kia EV9 will join Kia’s fully electric vehicle lineup later this year. Planned for arrival in fall 2023, the new Kia EV9 will be one of the largest electric sport utility vehicles you can find on the market. It is a three-row EV that is roughly the size of the gas-powered Kia Telluride although it is slightly shorter. On the other hand, it is taller and wider than the Telluride and features a longer wheelbase as well.
The new Kia EV9 won’t just be the largest electric vehicle offered by Kia, it will also be a showcase of some of the Korean automaker’s technical innovations. As we mentioned when the EV9 was introduced, the new SUV will feature sliding second- and third-row seats while the middle row will feature swivel seats which can rotate and face the third row. The seats can allow rear passengers to face each other on long drives while also turning towards the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the new EV9.
Despite its bulky, squarish design, the EV9 features an impressive aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.28.
What we did not know when the new EV9 was introduced on March 14 were the specs and more specifically the all-electric range offered by the new Kia SUV. Those details were confirmed last night at the global unveiling of the 2024 Kia EV9 which we attended virtually.
540 Kilometres of range on the WLTP cycle
We learned that the 2024 Kia EV9 will offer multiple versions in both RWD and AWD configurations. The base RWD configuration will pair a 77.6-kWh battery to the electric motor, although Kia didn’t provide range details. A second AWD model called the Long Range AWD trim will feature a larger 99.8-kWh battery and this model will provide 540 kilometres of range on the WLTP cycle.
Official EPA range numbers for the Kia EV9 are not yet known. Still, we can expect that EV9 to offer around 500 km of range when it arrives here in North America, but in Long Range RWD form.
Like the Kia EV6, the new EV9 will be built on Kia’s 800-volt electric architecture which enables significantly quick charging times. On a fast charger, the EV9 can add back an impressive 240 km of range in about 15 minutes.
The new EV9 will also feature vehicle-to-load charging, enabling owners to use the SUV’s battery to charge appliances or camping accessories at up to 3.7 kW. Eventually, the EV9 will also offer vehicle-to-grid capability.
Multiple powertrain options reaching 379 horsepower
The most powerful electric powertrain offered in the new EV9 will feature 379 hp and 442 pound-feet of torque while RWD models offer between 201 hp for the Long Range RWD and 214 horsepower for the standard RWD EV9. A Boost mode in AWD EV9 models pushes the max torque output to 516 lb.-ft. and sends the 2024 EV9 to 100 km/h in roughly 5.3 seconds.
Notably, Kia confirmed that they are working on an even more powerful GT model for 2025 although they did not release any additional specs or information. We know the current Kia EV6 GT delivers 576 hp and reaches 100 km/h in under 4.0 seconds.
Back to the 2024 Kia EV9’s more sensible versions, Kia says towing capacity will reach 5,000 pounds, although you can expect a significant drop in range if towing anywhere near that.
2023 Kia EV6 GT First Drive Review: Is the performance worth it?
Kia also provided more information on the 2024 EV9’s autonomous driving capability. The new SUV will feature the Highway Driving Pilot self-driving technology which is a Level 3 autonomous technology that enables hands-free operation. It has not been confirmed for North America although we expect the EV9 to offer the self-driving system at some point, if not at launch.
Pricing has not been announced either, although early reports that have leaked across the web suggest a starting price of between $56,000 and $73,000 in the US which would bring the Canadian equivalent price to somewhere in the $59,000-$75,000 range. Again, these details will follow as we get closer to the launch of the 2024 Kia EV9 this fall.
