2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Drops V8 for I6

Ain't nothing like a G-thing

  • New I6 for G 550, AMG still a monster

  • G-Wagen finally adds MBUX infotainment

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is finally getting a modern infotainment system. MBUX comes to the big-bucks off-roader, along with some small changes outside, and a new inline six in place of one of last year’s V8s.

This isn’t the electric G-Class we were all expecting, but it does get some bits from that one. Like new trim on the outside pillars that enhances aero, and a rear roof spoiler.

Under the hood of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550 is a new inline-six. The 3.0L engine replaces last year’s V8 but offers more power. That’s 443 hp, 27 more than before, along with 413 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes with 48V mild hybrid tech, which should give it slightly better fuel economy, and will give it some more torque way down low.

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63 doesn’t get a new engine. This beast keeps the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 that makes 577 hp and 627 lb-ft, though it does have the same 48V mild hybrid assist. Get the AMG Performance Pack, and it’ll hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, which seems almost criminal for something this big and mean.

It’s still an off-roader at heart, with a ladder frame and three locking differentials. The water fording clearance is still almost a yard, and it has just under 10 inches of ground clearance. There’s a new AMG Offroad Package Pro that adds two AMG drive modes and all-terrain tires for the V8 monster. The AMG will have a hydraulic-adjust roll-bar-free suspension for better handling on-road and off.

The big change inside is MBUX. That’s Merc’s latest infotainment software, with two big screens, excellent voice control, and an offroad cockpit camera view. The G even gets proximity entry for the first time, along with modern driver safety assists.

Expect the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class models on sale later this year. Don’t expect them to be easy to find. Or cheap.
