Prelude pairs hybrid system with Civic Type R chassis for a responsive touring experience.

Honda Canada will release the all-new 2026 Prelude hybrid-electric sports coupe later this month, adding a fourth model to its electrified lineup. The new Prelude is available in a single, well-equipped trim with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $49,990 CAD, or $52,988 with fees.
The 2026 Prelude introduces Honda’s two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain to a sports coupe format for the first time. It delivers a combined output of 200 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a unique fixed gear ratio drivetrain. Fuel economy ratings are estimated at 5.0 L/100 km in the city, 5.7 on the highway, and 5.4 combined.
Notably, the hybrid system operates without a traditional transmission or CVT. Instead, it relies on a direct-drive setup using a lock-up clutch and fixed gear ratio, enabling smooth power delivery from the electric motor and efficient highway cruising using the gas engine.
The Prelude also debuts Honda’s new S+ Shift drive mode, and borrows chassis components from the Civic Type R, including the dual-axis strut front suspension, and high-performance braking system. Also, the car rolls on an adaptive damper system, similar to the Type R but tuned exclusively for the Prelude.

All of these elements do raise the question: Civic Type R for about $55,000 with fees or a Prelude for roughly $2,000 less? Given that the Prelude will be available in limited numbers as well, will it be its greatest foe? Perhaps not, as both cars are aimed at different yet similar buyers: 40+ somethings with some nostalgia and disposable income. So that doesn’t answer the question. The near-$40,000 Civic Sport hybrid or the $46,000 Accord hybrid, maybe?
The more or less obvious competitors to the Prelude are the Toyota Prius, Kia Niro, Hyundai Sonata hybrid, and some hybrid compact SUVs like the Ford Escape ST-Line. In all cases, the Prelude is the most expensive.
Watching the Honda Prelude evolve on the market will be interesting. If anything, the Prelude will be a rare and pretty sight.
