2026 Kia EV5 GT-Line First Drive Review: Honey, I Shrunk the EV9

The 2026 Kia EV5 is shaping up to be a well-suited electric SUV for Canada:  practical, modern, and comfortable, with just the right size and tech to win over connected families.

Positives

  • Boxy, distinctive design
  • Spacious and functional cabin
  • NACS port and V2L technology
  • Smooth, quiet ride quality

Negatives

  • Uneven fit and finish, hard plastics
  • Overly intrusive driver assists
  • Awkward door handles

Sorry USA

While our American neighbors debate tax credits and “Buy American” policies, Kia is sending this small, cubical, and proudly Korean-built electric SUV exclusively to Canada. Production for our market will take place at Kia Autoland Gwangju in South Korea, with the front-wheel-drive version arriving in late Q1 2026, followed by the all-wheel-drive model in Q2. Since it’s not subject to the ongoing tariff battles affecting U.S. models, it won’t be available south of the border.

Industrial Chic

The EV5 follows Kia’s now-familiar boxy aesthetic, think of it as a scaled-down EV9, complete with square shoulders and a luminous “Tiger Face” front end that stands out in any grocery store parking lot. The 3D constellation-shaped headlights and 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels give it a premium toy-like personality, especially in the new Magma Red and Frost Blue colours. Bold and unapologetically unique.

A Blend of IKEA and Neo-Modernism

Inside, the minimalist approach works beautifully: recycled materials, vegan leather, twin panoramic 30-inch screens, and configurable ambient lighting that makes you want to camp inside. The massaging seats and rear area that converts into a sleeping space are clever touches for outdoorsy families.

Not everything’s perfect, though. Some plastics feel cheap, the climate buttons are mushy, and the flush door handles demand finger gymnastics. Storage solutions could be better too, the two-tier center console feels like it was designed for orangutan arms. Still, you get a 513-litre trunk, a 67-litre frunk, and even an interior V2L outlet to power camping gear or electronics.

The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function delivers up to 3.6 kW, enough to run a coffee maker or small fridge during a road trip or outage. Just don’t expect to power your house through an ice storm; it’s a backup generator, not a hydro dam.

Overprotective Tech

Kia’s new ccNC infotainment system is fast, clear, and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is responsive, and the interface feels more intuitive than Tesla’s.

But the safety systems go a bit overboard. Without a capacitive steering sensor, the car constantly nags you to hold the wheel. And then there’s the soundtrack of warnings, beeps for lane proximity, minor speed overages, or simply following too closely. After a day of testing on South Korea’s country roads, the car’s alerts were relentless. Safety is good, sensory overload, less so.

Quiet Confidence

The EV5 isn’t sporty, but it nails comfort. Suspension tuning feels Canadian-ready, soaking up rough pavement with ease. The steering is slightly firm but not communicative, and the body roll reminds you this is a chill cruiser, not a circuit car.

Our front-wheel-drive tester offered 214 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, perfectly adequate for everyday use. The upcoming AWD variant will bump that to 308 hp and 354 lb-ft.

Battery options include a 60.3 kWh pack or a larger 81.4 kWh unit. Kia claims up to 550 km WLTP for the big-battery FWD and 440 km WLTP for the AWD. Converted to EPA estimates, expect about 471 km and 377 km respectively. Our test drive averaged 18.2 kWh/100 km, suggesting 500 km could be realistic under good conditions.

Borrowing From Tesla

The inclusion of the NACS charging port is a big win for Canadian drivers, opening access to Tesla’s growing Supercharger network. However, the 400-volt architecture means it won’t charge as fast as the 800-volt EV6. The larger 81.4 kWh battery supports up to 11 kW AC (three-phase) charging at home, while smaller-battery versions get 6.6 kW AC (single-phase). DC fast-charging peaks at 150 kW, good for a 10-to-80 % top-up in about 30 minutes.

Verdict

The 2026 Kia EV5 looks like a near-perfect fit for Canadian families: stylish, practical, and well-equipped, with just enough quirk and comfort to stand out. Trims will include Air, Wind, and GT-Line, with pricing expected between $53,000 and $60,000 CAD, roughly matching today’s EV6.

A high-performance EV5 GT is rumoured to join the lineup for 2027, proof that Kia’s electric ambitions are far from shrinking.
