Mazda has officially pulled the wraps off the “new” 2026 CX-5, marking the debut of what is considered the third generation of one of its most important and best-selling models. The new CX-5 enters the market with a refresh design, updated technologies, and a clear focus on the brand’s premium aspirations.

Since it first hit Canadian roads in 2012, the CX-5 has become a cornerstone of Mazda’s SUV lineup. It was the first vehicle to fully integrate Mazda’s SkyActiv technologies and “Kodo: Soul of Motion” design language—a philosophy that has since defined the look and feel of all Mazda vehicles. In the 14 years since its launch, the CX-5 has carved out a solid place in the compact SUV segment, with over 300,000 units sold in Canada and more than 4.5 million globally.

Soft “Kodo”, but Bigger
Mazda is taking a strategic step forward with the third-generation CX-5, addressing past shortcomings while doubling down on its core design philosophy. For 2026, the compact SUV debuts an evolved version of the brand’s Kodo styling, this time inspired by the versatility and elegance of well-tailored clothing—designed to look sharp and feel right in any situation.
This isn’t a radical reinvention, but rather a thoughtful evolution. The new CX-5 is immediately recognizable, maintaining its signature Mazda silhouette while gaining sharper, more modern cues. Up front, the SUV features a striking fascia anchored by the Signature Wing grille and flanked by angular LED headlights that flow seamlessly into the bodywork. A sportier front bumper, complete with bolder air intakes, completes the refreshed look.
Along the sides, a more pronounced shoulder line gives the vehicle a stronger stance, while elongated rear doors improve access for second-row passengers. Sculpted side skirts and expressive body contours add flair, while the rear end features clean lines, slender taillights, and a newly designed liftgate that now proudly spells out “MAZDA” in place of the brand’s traditional logo. Dual exhaust tips, gloss black trim, and available 19-inch alloy wheels further emphasize the upscale direction.
Beyond aesthetics, the 2026 CX-5 has grown in size. Overall length increases by 4.5 inches (114 mm), while the wheelbase stretches by 3 inches (76 mm). Width is also up by more than half an inch (13+ mm), contributing to improved passenger comfort and cargo capacity.

Clean and Modern Stance
Inside, Mazda has embraced a minimalist approach with a completely revamped cabin. While full specs remain under wraps, a tiered dashboard layout houses a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen with Google built-in—Mazda’s largest display to date. This system includes Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to the Google Play Store. Entry-level trims will come with a slightly smaller 12.9-inch version.
In a move that may divide opinions, Mazda is adopting a “strategic reduction” of physical buttons. While this streamlines the cabin’s appearance, most vehicle functions are now controlled through the infotainment interface. Behind a new steering wheel embossed with “Mazda” lettering, drivers will find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Other highlights include redesigned seating for added comfort, an available panoramic sunroof, and seven-colour ambient lighting that extends into the door panels.

Thanks to its increased footprint, the CX-5 now offers more leg, knee, and headroom in the second row. The cargo area also benefits from this growth, gaining 51 mm in length and more than 25 mm in height, resulting in a 61-litre boost in storage space.
Same Old Story: That 6-Speed Automatic Lives On
At launch, Canadian buyers can expect a familiar powertrain: a 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder delivering 187 hp (139 kW) and 185 lb-ft (251 Nm) of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the engine’s output mirrors that of the outgoing model. However, Mazda says it’s been recalibrated for improved flexibility, offering quicker throttle response when needed and a quieter, more composed demeanour during cruising.

Looking ahead, a new hybrid powertrain will be introduced in 2027. Details are scarce, but Mazda has confirmed it will pair a next-generation SkyActiv-Z engine with hybrid technology, promising “enhanced performance and improved fuel efficiency.” No word yet on PHEV technology following in the footsteps of its bigger siblings, the CX-70 and CX-90.
When and How Much?
The first units of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 are expected to arrive at Canadian dealerships in early 2026. Since the model is built in Japan, it won’t be affected by tariffs. However, as is often the case, pricing is expected to increase compared to the 2025 models.
