The Subaru Crosstrek continues to be a hot seller in Canada, with strong demand coast to coast. A bit of good news for Canadian buyers: most Crosstreks sold here are sourced from Japan rather than the U.S., which means some variation in market offerings. While Subaru Canada has yet to confirm anything officially, word from the U.S. is that the 2.0-litre base engine is being phased out. Naturally, the question now is whether Canada will follow suit.
- The 2.0L currently powers the Convenience and Touring trims in Canada
- Switching to the 2.5L brings a notable 28-hp bump
- Any price increase is expected to remain reasonable
End of the 2.0L?
South of the border, Subaru is officially dropping the 2.0-litre Boxer four-cylinder from the Crosstrek lineup. This engine delivered 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. From now on, the base model in the U.S. will come standard with the 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque — the same unit currently found in higher non-hybrid Crosstrek trims.

28 More Horses for a Few Extra Bucks
In Canada, the 2.0L engine powers the entry-level Convenience and Touring trims, priced at $32,363 and $35,563 respectively. If this engine is dropped, expect a modest price increase. For reference, U.S. pricing only went up by about $435 USD — a small premium for the added performance.
Currently, Canadian buyers need to step up to the Onyx, Limited, or Wilderness trims to access the 2.5L engine, with pricing starting at $37,163. For 2026, Subaru is expected to roll out minor equipment upgrades, but details remain scarce until the automaker confirms its plans.

Hybrid Version Arriving Late 2026
Beyond engine tweaks, the biggest news for the 2026 Crosstrek is the return of a hybrid option. The upcoming model will pair a Boxer four-cylinder engine running Atkinson and Miller cycles with an electric motor and battery, producing a combined output of 194 horsepower.
Pricing details for the hybrid Crosstrek are expected closer to launch, but early estimates suggest a premium of around $3,000 over a comparable 2.5L model.
