2026 Toyota RAV4: 5 Key Questions Answered

  • The Toyota RAV4 has been a staple in Canada since 1996.

  • The 2026 model year introduces the vehicle’s sixth generation.

  • Buyers can choose between hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains for 2026.

After seven years on the market, the fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 is on its way out. Earlier this spring, Toyota unveiled the sixth generation of its best-selling compact SUV during a major event at its North American headquarters in Plano, Texas.

As we wait for its arrival at Quebec dealerships, here are five questions—and answers—about the 2026 Toyota RAV4.

  1. What are the 2026 Toyota RAV4 powertrain options?

Toyota is following a similar electrification strategy used on other models like the Camry. That means the sixth-generation RAV4 will be offered exclusively with hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains—no more gas-only versions.

For the first time, an SUV will feature Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. It includes a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, a transaxle, a battery pack, and an energy control unit. Full specs, including power and torque, have yet to be released. For context, the outgoing hybrid RAV4 delivers a combined output of 219 horsepower.

As for the plug-in hybrid model, it also uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with two electric motors and a battery. Output climbs to 320 horsepower—an 18 hp bump over the outgoing version. The electric-only driving range also increases from 68 to 80 kilometres.

Maximum towing capacity remains at 3,500 pounds, though more versions are now rated to tow that amount compared to the current generation.

  1. What trim levels are available on the 2026 RAV4?

Toyota will offer no fewer than nine trims for the 2026 RAV4. The hybrid powertrain will be available on the LE AWD, XLE AWD, XLE AWD with Premium Package, Limited AWD, and Woodland trims.

The plug-in hybrid system powers the SE AWD, XSE AWD, XSE AWD with Technology Package, and the all-new GR Sport AWD. Developed with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing engineering team, the GR Sport stands out with performance-focused tuning, including GR-calibrated suspension, revised steering, exclusive 20-inch wheels, sporty front and rear spoilers, and a unique GR Matrix grille. Toyota also highlights the model’s enhanced chassis rigidity.

  1. What new tech is featured inside the 2026 RAV4?

The jump from generation five to six brings a big tech upgrade. A new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is standard, and it’s fully customizable. Depending on the version, the centre touchscreen will measure either 10.5 or 12.9 inches.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and the infotainment system can handle two phones connected simultaneously. A six-speaker audio system is standard, with a nine-speaker JBL system available as an upgrade.

  1. When will the 2026 Toyota RAV4 arrive in Canada?

Production of the sixth-generation RAV4 is expected to begin at the end of 2025. Toyota’s Canadian facility will continue assembling hybrid-powered RAV4s and will now also handle battery module assembly—a significant new step in the production process. The plug-in hybrid version will be built in Japan.

Given these timelines, the first 2026 RAV4 units should start reaching Canadian dealerships in early 2026.

  1. What are the safety updates on the new RAV4?

Alongside the new RAV4, Toyota introduced its new Arene software development platform. The RAV4 is the first Toyota vehicle to feature the new Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 system.

While the company says detection capabilities have been improved over the outgoing system, few technical details have been shared so far. More information is expected before the vehicle officially goes on sale.

Lastly, pricing for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 has not yet been announced. Toyota will release more information as the on-sale date approaches.
