2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Gets New V8s With a Canadian Heart

The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 arrives with a completely redesigned exterior and interior, new V8 engines, more standard equipment and a simplified six-trim lineup. It also gains an important Canadian connection: General Motors has confirmed that its St. Catharines, Ontario, plant will assemble the new sixth-generation 5.7-litre and 6.6-litre Small Block V8 engines.

  • New 5.7L and 6.6L V8s, with some engines assembled in St. Catharines, Ontario

  • Simplified six-trim lineup, with SLE and SLT removed

  • More standard tech, including larger screens, Super Cruise availability and upgraded off-road hardware

New 5.7L and 6.6L V8 Engines

The familiar 5.3-litre and 6.2-litre V8s are being replaced by new 5.7-litre and 6.6-litre engines.

The 5.7 produces 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.6 delivers 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft. GMC says the new engines feature revised combustion, cooling and fuel-injection systems aimed at improving performance and refinement.

The enhanced TurboMax four-cylinder also gets more power, now producing 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft, while the 3.0-litre Duramax diesel continues with 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft.

Despite its smaller displacement, the 5.7-litre V8 is the towing leader of the lineup. Properly equipped, it can pull up to 13,500 lb (6,123 kg), while the larger 6.6-litre V8 is rated at up to 9,400 lb (4,264 kg).

Every 2027 Sierra engine is now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

GMC is also simplifying the Sierra lineup. The SLE and SLT disappear for 2027, leaving six trims: Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate.

The idea is straightforward. GMC says Canadian buyers were already frequently adding many of these features, so the company has made more of them standard.

The interior is also completely new.

On Denali Ultimate, GMC says the Sierra can offer more than 60 inches of combined digital displays, including a 16.3-inch centre screen, 11.5-inch passenger display, 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, 15-inch head-up display and 8.5-inch Rear Camera Mirror.
