2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Gets New Design and More Powerful Electrified Engines

• The C-Class gets a new illuminated grille, star-shaped lighting signatures and redesigned bumpers.
• The M 254 EVO turbocharged four-cylinder gains an electric auxiliary compressor and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system capable of providing up to 17 kW (23 horsepower) of additional output.

A Mercedes-Benz C-Class That Changes Without Starting Over

Mercedes-Benz is introducing a significant series of updates to the C-Class without fundamentally changing the formula of its compact luxury sedan. Instead, the automaker is taking a targeted approach, with changes affecting the design, powertrains, chassis and onboard technologies.

Visually, the front end is the easiest way to identify the new C-Class. It follows in the footsteps of the E-Class and S-Class, which have also been redesigned for 2027. The grille now has a stronger vertical emphasis and features a pattern made up of small chrome stars. An LED light guide integrated into the chrome surround can now illuminate the grille, while the central Mercedes star can also be illuminated in certain markets.

Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a new lighting signature inspired by its emblem. The daytime running lights now take the shape of a star, an element also found in the sedan’s taillights. A gloss-black section visually connects the headlights to the grille, helping emphasize the width of the front end.

The bumpers have also been redesigned with more sculpted surfaces and gloss-black and chrome inserts. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 19 inches, while two new 19-inch AMG wheel designs are available. Two new exterior colours also join the lineup: Lavender Silver Metallic and Moody Sky Grey Metallic.

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz will also offer an AMG Line Plus package on the C-Class. It adds the Night Package, gloss-black elements, sport seats, red contrast stitching and red seat belts.

A Heavily Revised Turbocharged Four-Cylinder

The mechanical changes are among the most significant aspects of this update. Mercedes-Benz continues to rely heavily on four-cylinder engines, but they are now more extensively electrified and have been developed with upcoming European Euro 7 emissions standards in mind. In North America, under the Trump administration, this is not an issue.

The 2.0-litre M 254 EVO gasoline engine remains at the heart of the lineup. It now receives a new electric auxiliary compressor powered by the 48-volt electrical system. Its primary purpose is to compensate for the response delay typically associated with a conventional turbocharger. The small electric compressor can reach its operating speed extremely quickly and generate boost while the engine is still running at low rpm.

Mercedes-Benz is therefore aiming for more immediate response when pulling away, during passing manoeuvres and especially when accelerating out of corners, where the time required for a conventional turbocharger to build boost can normally be noticeable.

Three output levels have been announced. The C 200 develops 177 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, the C 250 increases output to 218 horsepower and 236 lb-ft, while the C 300 produces 258 horsepower and approximately 295 lb-ft.

A More Prominent 48-Volt Mild-Hybrid System

The revised engine is complemented by a new generation of mild-hybrid technology. All combustion engines benefit from the ISG 2.0 integrated starter-generator.

First Drive — Mercedes-Benz Electric C-Class 2027: A Little S-Class

The system can provide up to 17 kW, or approximately 23 horsepower, along with as much as 151 lb-ft of additional torque. This electrical assistance is particularly useful at low engine speeds and during load transitions. The 48-volt electrical architecture also enables energy recuperation and coasting with the combustion engine switched off.

The objective is therefore not limited to reducing fuel consumption. Mercedes-Benz is also using electrification to improve powertrain smoothness and responsiveness. The integrated starter-generator enables nearly imperceptible engine restarts when the start-stop system is activated.

C 400 e 4MATIC Reaches 395 Horsepower

The plug-in hybrid represents another important part of the C-Class powertrain strategy. The C 400 e 4MATIC combines the four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor to produce a maximum combined output of 290 kW, or 395 horsepower, and approximately 479 lb-ft of torque.

Its battery has a usable capacity of 19.53 kWh and allows the C 400 e to travel up to 86 kilometres in fully electric mode. It is important to note, however, that this European figure is not directly comparable to an eventual official Canadian range rating.

Mercedes-Benz also goes beyond conventional Level 2 charging. The C 400 e can accept up to 11 kW on AC power and as much as 55 kW at a DC fast-charging station, a feature that remains relatively uncommon among plug-in hybrids.

More Dynamic Handling

Mercedes-Benz did not limit the changes to the powertrains. The suspension has been revised to make the C-Class more agile while preserving its traditional level of comfort.

Engineers have stiffened certain mounting points and recalibrated the adaptive dampers to further reduce body movement. The front suspension retains a four-link configuration on each side, while the rear uses a five-link multi-link setup.

Rear-wheel steering also remains available. With a maximum steering angle of 2.5 degrees, it reduces the turning circle by 43 centimetres to 10.64 metres. Below 100 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels to improve manoeuvrability. Above that speed, they turn in the same direction to increase stability.

A More Technological but Familiar Interior

Inside, Mercedes-Benz retains the familiar C-Class architecture while modernizing its digital environment. The digital instrument cluster measures 12.3 inches, while the vertically oriented 11.9-inch central touchscreen remains prominently positioned on the dashboard.

The multifunction steering wheel has been revised with a more conventional approach to certain controls. Mercedes-Benz notably brings back a roller for volume adjustment and a rocker switch for the cruise control and DISTRONIC functions.

More importantly, the C-Class adopts the fourth generation of MBUX, built around the MB.OS operating system. The virtual assistant combines several artificial intelligence technologies, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini, allowing it to manage more complex conversations and temporarily retain the context of previous exchanges.

Navigation is now based on Google Maps and can be combined with augmented-reality navigation technology inspired by the S-Class and EQS. Mercedes-Benz has also upgraded its DIGITAL LIGHT system with new micro-LED technology. The high-resolution illumination field increases by approximately 40 percent, while energy consumption can be reduced by as much as 50 percent.
