2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Unveiled: A Significant Refresh in Tech and Powertrains

The 2027 S-Class isn’t completely redesigned, but 55% of its parts have been improved or replaced, with the latest MBUX system leading the updates.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class arrives not as an all-new model, but as a deep and strategic evolution of the W223 generation. With over 2,700 components either newly developed or extensively refined, the S-Class continues its role as a technology flagship, this time with a stronger emphasis on intelligent software integration, electrified powertrains, and enhanced rear-seat luxury.

The design remains familiar, but underneath, the S-Class has been thoroughly future-proofed, led by the new MB.OS operating system and the most advanced MBUX iteration yet.

Subtle Exterior Design Updates

Visually, the changes to the 2027 S-Class are subtle, in keeping with the preferences of the sedan’s traditional buyer base. One of the most noticeable updates is the enlarged front grille. Now approximately 20% larger than its predecessor, the grille incorporates four horizontal chrome bars and a striking new lighting element.

For the first time on an S-Class, the grille can be illuminated, its fine, hot-stamped chrome stars creating a three-dimensional depth effect that enhances visibility and identity at night. A dark chrome version of the grille is also available as part of the optional Night Package, which pairs it with flush, body-coloured door handles.

For the first time, the traditional standing Mercedes-Benz star on the hood is available with illumination. The latter is paired with a new DIGITAL LIGHT twin-star headlamp design introduces micro-LED technology with an adaptive ULTRA RANGE high beam capable of reaching up to 600 metres.

Buyers can choose from a variety of wheel options. A new 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheel option debuts using an advanced high-pressure casting technique. Unlike conventional low-pressure die casting, this method allows for reduced thickness, sharper contours, and finer surface finishes.

MBUX Superscreen: The Square Screen is No More

Inside, Mercedes-Benz gave the S-Class material upgrades and greater functional detail. New illuminated cupholders, dual phone wireless charging pads, and 100W USB-C outlets are integrated into a redesigned centre console.

The 2027 S-Class debuts the latest MBUX interface, supported by the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a unified supercomputing platform that connects all vehicle domains. This fourth-generation MBUX features a redesigned Zero Layer interface, customizable widgets, and a new virtual assistant powered by generative AI from Microsoft, Google Cloud, and ChatGPT.

Moreover, the system can now receive over-the-air updates, meaning new features including new driver assistance technology can be introduced over time.

Gone are the distinct square centre display and large wood inlays facing the passenger. Instead, the MBUX Superscreen spans the centre console and the front passenger display under one seamless glass panel. The centre display measures 14.4 inches while the passenger faces a 12.3-inch screen. The floating 12.3-inch driver cluster offers multiple visual customization options as well an optional 3D view.

Navigation is powered by Google Maps, supported by MBUX Surround Navigation and an Augmented Reality head-up display. Features like MBUX Notes and MBUX Calendar offer AI-driven productivity tools that summarize dictated notes and integrate with calendar apps, providing a smarter in-car workspace.

At the driver’s seat, a redesigned multifunction steering wheel incorporates new tactile feedback systems based on customer input. Front seats offer up to 19 motors, supporting a range of adjustments and massage programs. Six massage settings, including Hot Stone and Deep Waves, can be synchronized with heating elements and air chambers to recreate what Mercedes-Benz calls “spa-like” sensations. Rear seating also supports massage functionality, while the optional Burmester® High-End 4D Surround Sound system with Dolby Atmos® transforms the cabin into an immersive acoustic environment that complements the physical comfort with sonic ambience.

If You Prefer Being Driven

While front-seat occupants enjoy high levels of customization and comfort, the rear cabin is arguably the best seat in the house. With the available Executive Rear Package, the space transforms into a fully connected workspace or sanctuary.

The long centre console between the two rear seats offers wireless charging, folding tables, and refrigerated cupholders, all finished in premium new trim options. Rear passengers can control their environment using newly added MBUX remote controls, which also allow access to the high-definition 13.1-inch rear displays. Integrated cameras support on-the-go video conferencing via platforms like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Webex—another nod to the S-Class’s evolving role as both a luxury cocoon and a productivity hub.

At the very least your kids will love it.

Heated Seat Belts and Airflow Control

Among the more novel introductions is the addition of heated seat belts for the front passengers. Thin heating filaments are integrated directly into the belt material, offering warmth almost instantly. Beyond comfort, Mercedes-Benz engineers suggest the feature may improve safety by encouraging occupants to shed bulky winter jackets, helping seat belts fit more snugly and effectively.

The S-Class also introduces Digital Vent Control—a fully automated climate management system that adjusts air vents based on personalized profiles. Compact actuators behind the vents control airflow direction automatically, with presets like “Focused” or “Rear Relaxation” accessible via MBUX. Good news, vents remain manually adjustable for those who prefer direct control.

Technology in the new 2027 S-Class has been improved as well. The vehicle uses ten cameras, five radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors to power advanced features like DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and a 360-degree parking system.

Powertrains and Comfort

The S-Class’s powertrain lineup has been thoroughly updated. The S 580 4MATIC continues with an upgraded 4.0-litre biturbo V8 (M177 Evo) producing 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Enhancements include revised intake systems, turbo components, and firing sequences for smoother performance and better fuel efficiency.

The S 500 4MATIC receives an improved inline-six (M256 Evo), now delivering 443 lb-ft of torque, with temporary boosts to 472 lb-ft via a new overtorque feature. Mild-hybrid tech with a 23-hp integrated starter generator supports coasting, energy recuperation, and silent start-stop transitions.

The 2027 S-Class now offers cloud-based suspension logic. Standard AIRMATIC air suspension incorporates predictive damping control, using road-surface data from Car-to-X communications to adjust suspension behavior in real time—such as softening damping ahead of a speed bump.

For those seeking maximum composure, the optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system adds even greater refinement, actively adjusting body movement to absorb imperfections before they impact ride quality. The intelligent damping algorithm was developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz and has been submitted for patent protection.

Rear-axle steering is now standard across the range. The base 4.5-degree system tightens low-speed turns and improves parking maneuverability, while the optional 10-degree setup can shrink the turning radius to under 11 metres. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in sync with the fronts, enhancing lane-change stability and overall road confidence.

While we did not have a chance to drive the new S-Class ourselves, we were allowed to ride in one. While improvements on comfort at this level of refinement are subtle, the ride-along did confirm the S-Class remains one of the most comfortable sedans available on the market, regardless of price range.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class may not look dramatically different from the outgoing model, but beneath the surface lies one of the most comprehensive mid-cycle updates in the sedan’s history.

With more than half of its components reengineered, a powerful new software backbone in MB.OS, and a redefined user experience through MBUX, the S-Class once again sets the tone for the industry—not through disruption, but through intelligent evolution.

The changes reflect what long-time S-Class buyers have come to expect: subtle exterior design, maximum comfort, and the most advanced technology Mercedes-Benz has to offer, all delivered with restraint and precision. In short, it will keep current S-Class fans happy, and may attract other buyers who feel the competition, specifically the BMW 7 Series, is a little too “over the top”.

Production of the new 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will begin in Sindelfingen later this year.
