2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S Brings Back the Manual Transmission in North America

Porsche is answering enthusiast demand by bringing a six-speed manual transmission back to the 911 Carrera S for 2027, creating a North America-exclusive model focused more on driver involvement than outright acceleration.

  • The 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S is once again available with a six-speed manual transmission through the new MT Package, offered exclusively in North America.
  • The manual Carrera S retains the 473-horsepower 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six and is available as both a Coupé and Cabriolet.
  • The MT Package goes well beyond the transmission, adding rear-axle steering, PASM Sport suspension, centre-lock wheels, Sport Chrono and other performance equipment as standard.

The Manual Transmission Returns to the Porsche 911 Carrera S

For driving enthusiasts who felt something was missing from the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S, the answer has arrived. Porsche is bringing the manual transmission back to the Carrera S for the 2027 model year with a new MT Package developed specifically for the North American market.

The move reverses one of the more controversial changes introduced with the 992.2-generation Carrera S. When the updated model arrived, it was offered exclusively with Porsche’s eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. Now, following what Porsche describes as overwhelming customer demand, buyers in Canada and the United States will once again have the option of changing gears themselves.

More importantly, Porsche has not simply replaced the PDK with a clutch pedal and manual gearbox. The MT Package effectively creates a more focused version of the Carrera S, combining additional performance hardware with reduced weight and a decidedly more analogue approach.

A Six-Speed Manual Borrowed From the Carrera T

At the heart of the package is the six-speed manual transmission already used in the 911 Carrera T. Unlike the PDK-equipped Carrera S, the manual version is offered exclusively with rear-wheel drive.

Its mission is also somewhat different. Porsche openly positions the manual Carrera S around driving enjoyment rather than achieving the quickest possible acceleration numbers. It slots between the Carrera T and the more extreme GT models, offering significantly more power and customization potential than the T without moving into full GT territory.

The addition also expands Porsche’s increasingly unusual commitment to three-pedal sports cars. With the arrival of the Carrera S MT Package, Porsche will offer seven 911 variants with a conventional manual transmission in North America.

In an industry where manual gearboxes continue to disappear, Porsche is effectively moving in the opposite direction with one of its most important sports cars.

473 Horsepower and a More Focused Chassis

The manual transmission does not come at the expense of power. The 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package retains Porsche’s 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 473 horsepower.

The Coupé weighs 1,509 kilograms, just five kilograms more than the 911 Carrera T Coupé. That relatively low figure is helped by the adoption of centre-lock wheels, appearing as standard equipment on a Carrera S for the first time. Porsche says the wheels save more than seven kilograms compared with the conventional Carrera S setup.

The MT Package also includes rear-axle steering and PASM Sport suspension, which lowers the car by 10 mm. Sport Chrono is standard, as is unique exhaust tuning.

The braking system uses 408-mm cast-iron front discs with six-piston fixed calipers and 380-mm rear discs with four-piston calipers. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes remain optional, giving the manual Carrera S another performance upgrade unavailable on the Carrera T.

More Than Just a Third Pedal

Porsche has also given the manual Carrera S several visual and tactile details to distinguish it from the standard model.

Perhaps the most obvious from behind the wheel is the walnut shift knob, reinforcing the analogue character Porsche is trying to create. Four-way Sport Seats Plus are standard, while 14-way Sport Seats, 18-way Sport Seats Plus and folding lightweight carbon-fibre bucket seats are optional.

Other standard features include titanium exhaust outlets with black trim, a SportDesign front fascia and a red “S” badge at the rear. The latter is a subtle detail inspired by a modification popular among North American Porsche enthusiasts.

An optional exterior package adds black HD-Matrix Design headlights, Ceramica-finished wheels and special puddle lights that project the six-speed manual shift pattern onto the ground.

Inside, another optional package introduces Plaid Sport-Tex seat centres with Chalk stripes, matching stitching and seat belts, along with Ceramica trim and black brushed-aluminium accents.

Coupé and Cabriolet, With Extensive Personalization

Unlike some enthusiast-focused 911 variants, the manual Carrera S does not significantly restrict customization.

Porsche will offer the MT Package on both Coupé and Cabriolet body styles, with 17 standard exterior paint colours as well as Paint to Sample and, subject to availability, Paint to Sample Plus. More than 70 leather interior configurations will also be available.

That breadth of personalization helps distinguish the Carrera S MT from the Carrera T. The latter remains the more accessible manual Carrera, while the S combines the traditional gearbox with greater power, additional chassis technology and a much broader catalogue of options.

2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S MT Pricing and Availability

Canadian customers can order the 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S with MT Package now. Pricing starts at $177,500 for the Coupé, while the Cabriolet begins at $191,800.

Deliveries are expected to start before the end of 2026.

The return of the manual gearbox may ultimately be more significant than the additional equipment. Porsche could have left the Carrera S as a PDK-only model and reserved the three-pedal experience for specialized versions such as the Carrera T and GT3. Instead, customer demand has convinced the company to bring the manual back to one of the core members of the 911 family.

For enthusiasts, that means the 473-horsepower Carrera S can once again be enjoyed with six gears, three pedals and considerably more driver involvement.
