2027 Range Rover Electric: 542 HP, 535 KM of Range and a New Era for the Luxury SUV

For the first time, the Range Rover goes fully electric, combining a 118.5-kWh battery, an 800-volt architecture and 542 horsepower while retaining the off-road capability and refinement that have long defined the brand’s flagship luxury SUV.

  • Two electric motors produce up to 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
  • A 118.5-kWh usable battery and 800-volt architecture provide up to 535 km of estimated EPA range, while a 10-80% DC fast charge takes approximately 22 minutes.
  • Unlike the Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque, the new EV remains a fully electric version of the flagship Range Rover and retains serious off-road capability, including the ability to wade through up to 900 mm of water.

A Range Rover First, an Electric Vehicle Second

Rather than creating an entirely separate electric model, Range Rover chose to electrify its flagship SUV without fundamentally altering its philosophy. The Range Rover Electric therefore shares its architecture with internal-combustion, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions built in Solihull, United Kingdom.

This approach follows the Range Rover Sport Electric while differentiating the new model from the upcoming Range Rover GT. More importantly, the Range Rover Electric is not positioned as a separate EV within the lineup. It is the fully electric interpretation of the traditional flagship Range Rover, retaining its familiar proportions, premium positioning and off-road credentials.

Range Rover Unveils All-Electric GT as Family’s Fifth Model

Visually, the differences are deliberately subtle. The grille has been optimized for aerodynamics, as have the wheels and underbody, all with the goal of reducing drag and improving efficiency without significantly altering the Range Rover’s recognizable appearance. That’s essentially it.

For now, the Range Rover Electric is available exclusively in short-wheelbase configuration and Autobiography trim. Pricing in Canada starts at $200,800.

542 HP and, More Importantly, 627 LB-FT of Instant Torque

The most significant transformation is found beneath the body. The Range Rover Electric uses two 260-kW permanent-magnet electric motors, with one mounted on each axle. Together, they produce up to 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. According to Range Rover, that is more torque than any Range Rover offered to date.

The 2027 Range Rover Electric can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds, while the 80-120 km/h sprint takes just 2.7 seconds.

The difference compared with gasoline and hybrid Range Rovers therefore goes beyond near-silent operation. The immediate response of the electric motors becomes a defining part of the driving experience, delivering power without the delay associated with a combustion engine or transmission.

The motors also use silicon carbide semiconductors designed to improve switching speeds and overall energy efficiency.

A Massive 118.5-kWh Battery and 800-Volt Architecture

The Range Rover Electric is powered by a double-stacked lithium-ion battery with 118.5 kWh of usable capacity. The pack contains 344 prismatic cells and operates on an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture.

Maximum driving range is estimated at 535 km according to EPA testing. Perhaps more importantly for a large luxury SUV equipped with such a substantial battery, DC fast-charging capability reaches up to 350 kW.

Under ideal conditions, charging from 10 to 80% takes approximately 22 minutes. A 10-minute stop at a sufficiently powerful DC fast charger can add up to 200 km of driving range.

Thermal management also plays an important role. The ThermAssist system manages battery and powertrain temperatures to optimize range, charging performance and efficiency in extreme weather conditions. According to Range Rover, the technology can reduce heating energy consumption by 40% and contribute up to 40 km of additional driving range.

For North America, the Range Rover Electric features a native NACS charging port, providing access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

Electric Technology Enhances Range Rover’s Off-Road Capability

This may be where the Range Rover Electric most clearly separates itself from conventional luxury electric SUVs. Electrification has not been used as an excuse to abandon the capabilities traditionally associated with the Range Rover name.

The Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system can vary rear torque distribution from 0 to 100%. Integrated Traction Management can adjust motor speed in just 50 milliseconds, making it up to 100 times faster than a comparable system paired with an internal-combustion powertrain.

Even one-pedal driving has been adapted for off-road use. The Range Rover Electric can pull away on gradients of up to 33 degrees and tackle rolling climbs of up to 45 degrees.

Its ground clearance and sealing also allow it to wade through water up to 900 mm deep, preserving one of the capabilities that has traditionally separated the Range Rover from more road-focused luxury SUVs.

Positioning the large battery pack beneath the floor also lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity. It works in combination with a twin-chamber air suspension designed to preserve Range Rover’s characteristic ride comfort while improving body control.

Quieter Than Any Other Range Rover

While V8-powered Range Rovers rely partly on their engine performance and mechanical character to create a distinctive driving experience, the Range Rover Electric takes a very different approach by emphasizing isolation, smoothness and near-silent operation.

Without a combustion engine, vibrations and mechanical noise are naturally reduced inside the cabin. Electrification therefore becomes more than simply a way of eliminating tailpipe emissions. It fits naturally into the Range Rover philosophy, where quietness, smoothness and effortless performance have always been central to the luxury experience.

Range Rover says the Electric covered more than 1.4 million kilometres during development, with testing conducted in temperatures as low as -40°C in Sweden, in the extreme heat of Dubai and across the demanding off-road terrain of Eastnor Castle in the United Kingdom. More than 300 patent applications have been filed in connection with the vehicle.

Ultimately, the 2027 Range Rover Electric is not a complete departure from the traditional Range Rover. It is an electric interpretation of it. The technology changes dramatically, but the philosophy remains largely intact.

The bigger question is whether Range Rover can succeed where Mercedes-Benz has struggled with the electric G-Class.
