2028 Jeep Grand Cherokee Will Reportedly Open Its Engine Bay to a Hurricane Inline-Six

The 3.0L twin-turbo engine could offer more power and torque than the Grand Cherokee’s ex-5.7L Hemi V8.

  • Grand Cherokee could receive the standard-output Hurricane inline-six for the 2028 model year.

  • The 3.0L twin-turbo engine produces 420 hp and 468 lb-ft in other Stellantis vehicles.

  • Jeep has confirmed another Grand Cherokee SRT, but has not yet announced its powertrain.

Jeep could add to the Grand Cherokee engine range for the 2028 model year with Stellantis’ twin-turbocharged 3.0L Hurricane inline-six. It will give the SUV a higher-output option above its newer four-cylinder powertrain. Jeep has not confirmed the reported 2028 production plan.

Reports indicate that the Grand Cherokee is expected to receive the standard-output version of the six-cylinder engine, and not the high-output version, at least for now. In existing Stellantis vehicles like the Grand Wagoneer, the standard-output Hurricane produces 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. The high-output version reaches 550 hp and 531 lb-ft. These are numbers for a “special” Grand Cherokee trim…

Adding the six-cylinder would change the Grand Cherokee’s available performance and refinement range. Jeep introduced a Hurricane four-cylinder for the 2026 model year with 324 hp, nearly matching the previous 5.7L Hemi V8, which produced 360 hp and 390 lb-ft.

Compared to the HEMI, the standard-output inline-six would deliver 60 more horsepower and 78 lb-ft more torque than the V8. The extra torque could also let Jeep increase the Grand Cherokee’s towing rating. The current four-cylinder model has a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 lbs, or about 2,812 kg.

Given this information, the 5.7L Hemi’s return appears unlikely for mainstream Grand Cherokee models. Stellantis executive Tim Kuniskis has previously said the engine does not fit the company’s plans for the SUV, as the company seeks to maintain greater product differentiation between the Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

That does not necessarily eliminate V8 power from future performance versions. Jeep has announced plans for another Grand Cherokee SRT, although its engine specifications have not been confirmed. The aforementioned High-Output Hurricane could be an excellent starting point, though it will need to go to “make some noise” school to avoid RHO-level complaints.

Jeep has demonstrated that it is evaluating the Hurricane six-cylinder in the Grand Cherokee platform. A prototype shown in August combined a modified high-output Hurricane with an eBoost Air system designed to reduce turbocharger response time. The experimental setup was described as capable of theoretically reaching 640 hp. This is a proper SRT figure.

There is no indication that the eBoost Air technology will accompany the reported 2028 engine addition. If the standard-output Hurricane arrives, it will instead give Jeep a production-ready six-cylinder option positioned between the Grand Cherokee’s mainstream powertrain and future performance-focused SRT variants.
