2028 Volvo XC40 Refresh: New Look, Google Gemini Interior, The EX40/EC40 Are Out

  • Redesigned front and rear fascias, featuring new 15-segment Matrix LED headlights.
  • A new 11.2-inch center touchscreen with the Google Gemini voice assistant anchors the redesigned cabin.
  • The electric EX40 and EC40 are no longer sold in North America.

A Reworked Face, From Grille to Wheels

The most noticeable changes are up front. A wider, thinner grille now features diagonal slats aligned with the Volvo emblem, while a more angular front bumper reshapes the SUV’s nose. The hood gets crisp, faceted lines meant to evoke cut granite, and new front fenders give the XC40 a bolder stance.

The signature “Thor’s Hammer” headlights move to Matrix LED technology, with 15 segments per unit for more precise lighting, the same setup found on the XC90. Just like its big brother, a slimmer point tapering toward the grille. Around back, Volvo refreshed the LED taillights, tailgate, and rear bumper, and buyers can now spec diamond-cut wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches.

A Cabin Built Around the New Screen and AI

Inside, the biggest update sits at the center of the dashboard: a new 11.2-inch, tablet-style vertical touchscreen running Volvo’s new-generation interface. Its headline feature is the integration of Google Gemini, which understands natural-language commands, plans routes, finds stops along a trip, and manages messages. The system also supports over-the-air software updates sent straight to the car, no dealer visit required. Volvo hasn’t neglected the basics either: new storage solutions, upgraded upholstery and trim materials, and reworked ambient lighting are all meant to give the refreshed XC40 a richer, more premium feel. Cargo space now tops out at 1,433 liters with the rear seats folded.

Under the Hood: A Sharper Mild Hybrid, No More EVs

Mechanically, the XC40 keeps its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine, rated at 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds up to 10 kW (13 hp) and an extra 30 lb-ft of torque, sharpening throttle response and cutting down on turbo lag. While the electric EX40 and EC40 will carry on internationally, they won’t return for the 2028 model year in North America. Volvo says both EVs will eventually get a successor, though the automaker hasn’t shared further details.

2028 Volvo XC40 Pricing and Availability

Volvo has not yet released pricing for the mild-hybrid XC40 B5. Expect a modest increase over the current base price of $49,338 from 2026. The 2028 Volvo XC40 is set to arrive at dealerships in early spring 2027.
