Boasting numbers, be they for towing or hauling, is the name of the game in the Heavy Duty Truck league.
The new 2019 RAM Heavy Duty has just thrown the gauntlet to the ground and it landed with a huge 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque.
Like the all-new 2019 RAM 1500, this new generation 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty units are fresh from the ground up. Do you know what’s most important? 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque! That is all.
But seriously, RAM’s out to take everyone on with all-new frames built with 98.5-percent high-strength steel and countless feature that will ensure its superiority.What’s also important is the truck’s lovely new interior.
What is the RAM Heavy Duty?
At the moment, it is the most powerful, most capable full-size heavy-duty pickup currently available on the market.
All heavy (and super) duty trucks are destined for a life of hard work. The competition in this segment is arguably the toughest, and on many levels. No longer is it sufficient to tow 35,000 lbs. but the passengers must be treated like royalty.
The RAM HD must answer all challenges including styling, technology and the aforementioned capability. As is, the 2019 RAM Heavy Duty has knocked it out of the park.
What are the variants available with the 2019 RAM HD?
At the moment, we’ve been unable to extract the exact number of trims from FCA’s press material on the new 2019 RAM Heavy Duty.
For each model, 2500 and 3500, there will be at the very least trims including the Power Wagon for the 2500. Variants such as the ST, SLT and Laramie are sure to return. Chassis Cab models will be offered again as well.
What’s under the hood of the 2019 RAM HD?
A big, monstrously powerful Cummins diesel engine. At least as an option.
The base engine is no less than the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that generates 410-horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic.
The big story is the new generation Cummins’ 6.7-litre inline-6 diesel engine. Its block is new and weighs in at 60 lbs. (27 kg) lighter than the old one, features a new cast-iron cylinder head and stronger pistons. An improved variable-geometry turbocharger capable of 33 psi of boost and all-new exhaust system are responsible for the gains. Output is now rated at 400 horsepower @ 2,800 rpm and 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1,800 rpm.
The mid-step on the power latter is a de-tuned version of the 6.7-litre Cummins which produces 370-horsepower and 850 lb.-ft. of torque. Both Cummins rely on a 6-speed automatic transmission however the 3500’s with the 1,000 lbs of twisting power’s unit is an Aisin.
When properly equipped, the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty has a towing capacity of 15,921 kg (35,100 lbs.) and payload capacity of 3,484 kg (7,680 lbs.).
When will it be available and at what price?
The new 2019 Heavy Duty RAMs are expected in the spring. Pricing has yet to be made public but it will be announced closer to launch date. More than likely, the base 2500 will start somewhere between $40,000 and $42,000. A loaded 3500 will easily top out over $100,000.
What do we think about the 2019 RAM HD?
While we’re fans of the Ford Super Duty, we must admit that we love what RAM’s doing recently.
The effort FCA’s put into its trucks has not gone unnoticed. These workhorses have the most luxurious, well-appointed cabins of any trucks, not to mention technology. You can get Uconnect 4C NAV on an available 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen and a 7-inch 3D animation-capable driver information display.
Fit, finish and materials are worthy of most luxury cars and so, according to RAM, will the level of comfort and refinement. Get this, there’s even an active noise cancellation system on board. And finally, it looks incredibly good! It crushes the regrettable GM trucks and out-classes the Ford.
