Well, it was bound to happen. Porsche unveiled a four-door coupe version of its Cayenne SUV.
Although the newsroom is divided, a few of us here think this is great news. There is not one shred of doubt that the Porsche Cayenne Coupe will be a market success story.
And what happens when Porsche sells a lot of cars purists don’t like? Purists get more cars they do like. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Cayenne Coupe.
What’s new about the Porsche Cayenne Coupe?
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe, or Coupé if you prefer, is a new Porsche Cayenne SUV with what Porsche calls a sportier design. Essentially, it’s a Cayenne with a sloping rear roof line. Imagine what would have happen if a Cayenne and Macan had a child, and you’re on the right track.
Measuring the same size as an Audi Q8, The Cayenne Coupe is a bit taller and quite a bit longer than a Macan. It’s also longer than it’s Cayenne brother but a tad smaller in height.
For now, only two versions of the Cayenne Coupe are available: the base model and the Turbo. A 3.0-liter V6 with 335 horsepower powers the entry-level model while a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 with 541 horsepower is found under the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo’s hood.
There’s no mention of a Cayenne Coupe S or Cayenne Coupe E-Hybrid, but we are guessing they won’t be far off if Porsche’s latest SUV proves popular enough.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the Cayenne Coupe and the regular Cayenne is rear seat capacity. Ther are only four seats in the new Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
Cargo capacity is rated at 625 liters for the entry-level model, and 600 liters for the Cayenne Coupe Turbo. Total cargo space rises to 1,540 liters if you fold the rear seats down. The traditional Cayenne can fit 770 liters with all seats in place.
So the 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe is a less practical, less spacious Porsche Cayenne with a more distinctive design.
What’s the new Porsche Cayenne Coupe’s price?
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe starts at $86,400. The Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo starts at $148,000.
Standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels, but you can add what Porsche calls the Lightweight Sport Package and get 22-inch wheels plus a host of weight reducing features. Other no-charge features include Park Assist, speed-sensitive Power Steering Plus, Porsche Active Suspension Management, and the Sport Chrono package.
As with any Porsche, there are limitless options to personalize the exterior and interior design as well as the equipment list.
What’s the release date?
Porsche dealers will start ordering at the end of May. You can already configure your Porsche Cayenne Coupe online.
Which others cars should you check out if you’re thinking of buying a Porsche Cayenne Coupe?
For now, the only available option is the Audi Q8. We did a quick comparison on the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and the Audi Q8 so you can check that out to learn more.
The BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe are two direct competitors, but they are both in limbo at the moment. The models on which they are based, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE respectively, have been redesigned this year. The all-new X6 and GLE Coupe versions should follow soon.
What do we think about it?
We get what Porsche is doing and we certainly understand it. You will see plenty of 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe models on the road in the upcoming years, and because a vehicle like this doesn’t cost too much to create (because the base already exists), it’s going to be an incredible money maker for Porsche.
Many here feel that it looks pretty darn good as well. Matt hates it, but he’s been in a bad mood recently so who know’s what’s going on there.
