Toyota’s Rumoured F-150 Raptor Rival Could be Called the Tundra TRD Hammer

  • Toyota filed for a trademark on that name in the United States.

  • A high-performance, off-road capable version of the Tundra has long been anticipated.

  • Few details have been announced, but we should expect a long-travel suspension and 37-inch tires.

For years, there have been rumours that Toyota would build a high-performance off-road truck to rival the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ram 1500 TRX, but the automaker has never confirmed them.

However, there are more and more clues that Toyota is indeed working on a more extreme version of the Tundra, including a trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Indeed, the automaker filed an application for a trademark on the name “TRD Hammer” on March 10th.

While there are no details identifying which vehicle could wear this name in the filing, TRD Hammer was one of the choices provided for evaluation in a survey recently sent to Toyota owners.

The other options were TRD Baja, TRD Iron, TRD Pro-S, TRD Bizurk, and TRD Quake, all suggesting toughness and performance.

If that’s not enough, a brief paragraph accompanying the survey said: “This high-performance truck package is designed for off-road enthusiasts, featuring an engineered long-travel suspension and 37-inch all-terrain tires. With the truck’s unique wide fenders, high-clearance bumpers, and a powerful engine, it achieves exceptional off-road capability and performance”.

This sounds very much like a description of the Raptor and TRX.

As mentioned, we don’t currently have mechanical details on this possible upcoming truck, but in order to truly be competitive, it will need more power than the 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque offered by the Tundra TRD Pro.

This could mean either a more powerful version of the twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 currently in use, or possibly a new V8 engine, which Toyota is said to be developing.

Since nothing has been confirmed, we don’t have a timeline for the TRD Hammer’s launch, if it does launch, but a source has reportedly told The Drive that it could be expected for the 2028 model year.

Lending credibility to this, a Tundra prototype wearing camouflaged wide front and rear fenders, all-terrain tires, off-road wheels, and a lifted suspension was spotted driving around the Detroit area last July.
