In the truck world, standing out matters, especially when you’re playing catch-up with the competition. Nissan is offering solid proof: the automaker has just filed a patent application with U.S. authorities for a feature that could shake things up in the midsize truck segment. The filing describes a fold-down midgate that would let the cabin transform to add extra cargo space.

How Does it Work ?
Nissan envisions a setup where the rear seatbacks fold flat, letting the partition retract to open a pass-through between the cabin and the bed. The floor becomes completely flat, maximizing the space available for hauling longer items that otherwise wouldn’t fit in the bed.
The partition is a single piece, so both rear seats must fold down at the same time to activate the mechanism.
This isn’t the first time the industry has taken this route. Chevrolet pioneered the concept with the Avalanche, launched back in 2002. Today, General Motors remains the only brand still offering this setup, limited to the electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

A Potential Edge
This isn’t the first time Nissan has flirted with this approach, either. The automaker has filed several similar applications over the past few years, suggesting a genuine push behind the technology rather than just an idea thrown out into the wind.
More than anything, the Frontier needs something to set it apart from its rivals. This would be a genuinely useful way to boost its hauling chops.
That said, since this is only a patent application for now, there’s no guarantee the mechanism will ever make it onto a production vehicle. Automakers file plenty of patents that never get past the application stage.
Still, if Nissan manages to work this feature into its next Frontier, it could hand itself a real edge over the competition, at least until everyone else follows suit.
