A Few Good Mustangs: Shelby Launches 1,300 hp GT500 Code Red

Twin-turbo GT500 makes 1,000 hp on pump gas

  • Turbocharged GT500 makes massive power

  • Only 30 special Mustangs will be built

Who ordered the Code Red? It was Shelby American. Turning a GT500 into a monster with a special edition car that can make up to 1,300 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque, limited to just 30 for the whole world.

Shelby American calls the Shelby GT500 Code Red an experimental car, much like storied Shelby hardware including the Green Hornet, Super Snake, and Little Red. The Super Snake got a 427-cubic inch race engine and Little Red had twin superchargers to give you an idea of what Carrol had in mind.

Code Red takes a supercharged Shelby Mustang GT500 and yeets the supercharger in the bin. In its place, Shelby straps on a pair of Xona dual ball-bearing turbochargers, new downpipes, and stainless steel tubular exhaust manifolds.

That’s not enough to make the 5.2L V8 happy with the power figures Shelby wanted, so it has healthy internal upgrades too. Manley pistons, ARP studs, Ferrea valves, upgraded timing chains, and a Ford Performance oil pump gear.

To make even more power, it has a Fathouse Performance intake and intercooler, larger heat exchangers, high-flow fuel injectors and rails, and upgraded fuel pumps. All controlled by a Motec ECU.

On 93-octane pump gas, the car will make 1,000 hp and 780 lb-ft. On E85 it does the big numbers, 1,300 hp and 1,000 lb-ft.

New half-shafts handle the extra shove, and suspension upgrades include adjustable springs, new sway bars, a new MagneRide calibration, and a Shelby Widebody package. Buyers will also get a carbon hood, front splitter and difuser, and rear wing. Oh, and loads of Shelby badges inside and out with numbered plaques.

While some of Shelby’s offerings are available direct from dealers, this one is different. Shelby will build 10 each based on model year 2020, 2021, and 2022. It will cost $209,995 on top of your existing car, and you’ll need to reach out to Shelby to buy. Good luck.
