A Genesis G80 Sport May Happen

The time is ripe for Genesis to launch a high-performance version of their midsize G80 sedan

  • The all-new Genesis G80 luxury sedan arrives in a few weeks.

  • The new car is supremely luxurious and posh.

  • A Sport could be the first 400+ horsepower Genesis.

As we’ve reported many times this year, Genesis is on a serious roll. In the last ten months, we’ve seen the GV80, a new G70, much of the GV70 and the G80. The latter is poised to bridge between luxury car segments with BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class equipment but priced far lower. The only element both of these German cars have over the G80 is a high-performance version. Looks like that’s about to change with a new Sport trim.

Details on the Genesis G80 Sport are scarce. As reported by carscoops.com, a Sport trim will be a very likely occurrence as Mark Del Rosso, president and chief executive of Genesis Motor North America said: “Let your imagination run wild. Stay tuned on Sport. You never know.”

When the 2021 Genesis G80 hits the road in a few weeks, the most powerful version of the G80 will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 which will produce 375-horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. It will feature an 8-speed automatic transmission, AWD, and an electronically controlled suspension.2021 Genesis G80

We have to assume, given how serious Genesis is about punching its way into the German-dominated segment, that they won’t simply put fancy wheels and different bumpers and call it a Sport. It’s with this in mind that we suspect that 450 horsepower, with or without electrification, is only a starting point.
