A New Trademark Hints at a More Powerful Version of the Lexus RZ EV

Lexus could be working on a more powerful version of the RZ electric SUV.

  • Lexus has trademarked the RZ F name in Europe and Australia.

  • Such a model could compete with the Hyundai IONIQ 5N and the Kia EV6 GT.

  • Its design could be inspired by the RZ 450e F Sport Performance version unveiled in Japan.

A few automakers have launched high-performance versions of their new electric crossovers over the last year or two, and it seems Lexus could be the next to follow.

Indeed, trademark filings reveal the company has asked to register the name Lexus RZ F for use in Europe and Australia.

Given what we know about the brand’s naming convention, this hits at a performance-focused variant of its only electric vehicle offered in North America, the new RZ 450e.

While no other details have been revealed, it is expected that a future F version of the RZ would receive much more powerful motors and significant design alterations to match the RC F and the former IS F.

Speaking of design, the appearance of a future RZ F could be inspired by the sporty RZ 450e F Performance package that was recently unveiled in Japan.

Here, it is important to distinguish between F and F sport, as both labels don’t mean the same thing in the automaker’s product portfolio. In fact, F models benefit from much more power than their regular counterparts, usually thanks to a naturally aspirated V8 engine, while the F Sport models feature similar design changes but remain mechanically similar to the base versions of each car.

As the trademarks call for an RZ F and not an RZ F Sport, we should expect this model to be similar in concept to the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N and Kia EV6 GT.

We don’t know yet how much power this model could make, but considering the two Korean performance SUVs make 641 horsepower and 576 horsepower respectively, it should be in a similar ballpark if Lexus really wants to be competitive.

Since the regular RZ 450e generates 308 horsepower in its current guise, the RZ F would likely receive new, more powerful motors and a larger battery that would allow it to deliver more instantaneous power than the 71.4 kWh unit in the regular model.

In addition, fitting a larger battery could help offset the reduction in range that would be caused by bigger motors and a more aggressive exterior style, which is welcome since the RZ 450e’s range of 354 kilometres is on the lower side of the spectrum.

As mentioned, the trademarks for this possible future models have only been applied for in Europe and Australia, which means it might not make it to North America, if it ever gets to production in the first place.

Indeed, automakers often protect names in order to make sure they are available in case they decide to produce a certain type of vehicle later on.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes out of this in the coming months or years.
