Acura NEXERA Vision: A Sexy Coupe That Previews the Next RDX Hybrid

As Acura celebrates its 40th anniversary, the brand is using Monterey Car Week to introduce the NEXERA Vision, a spectacular concept that does more than simply explore its future. It establishes the foundation for a new design language that will influence upcoming Acura production models.

  • The Acura NEXERA Vision introduces a new design identity that will influence the brand’s future models.
  • Its new lighting signature will make its production debut on the next-generation Acura RDX Hybrid.
  • The dramatic coupe features butterfly doors, active aerodynamics, 22-inch wheels and a cockpit designed entirely around the driver.

Acura Prepares Its Next Design Chapter With the NEXERA Vision Concept

Designed at the Acura Design California studio in Los Angeles under the direction of Yasutake Tsuchida, Acura’s new Creative Director and Vice President of Auto Design, the coupe previews several elements that will eventually make their way to the fourth-generation RDX Hybrid, expected to arrive in the coming years.

“We are using the 40th anniversary of Acura as a springboard to our future, with the Acura NEXERA Vision serving as the design language for future Acura models,” said Yasutake Tsuchida. “Our goal with this new design direction is to define Acura performance through disciplined proportions, sculpted form and the seamless integration of advanced technology.”

A Dramatic Coupe to Define the Next Generation of Acura

The NEXERA Vision takes the form of a coupe with particularly aggressive proportions. Finished in Matte Titanium, its bodywork features a wide stance, a long dash-to-axle ratio and a cabin that appears to flow seamlessly into the rest of the vehicle.

Acura has added several dramatic elements, including dual-hinge butterfly doors and active aerodynamics. At the rear, a movable spoiler manages airflow across the decklid to improve aerodynamic efficiency, high-speed stability and braking performance.

Forged carbon fibre is used extensively throughout the vehicle, including on the front aero-channel fascia, rear diffuser, rocker panels and portions of the internal door structures.

The concept also rides on 22-inch centre-lock wheels, a first for Acura. They feature a three-dimensional directional design with forged carbon fibre inserts. Behind them are Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes.

Acura, however, has provided no details regarding a potential powertrain. For now, the NEXERA Vision should therefore be viewed primarily as a design study rather than confirmation of a future production sports car.

A New Lighting Signature Headed for Production

This is probably one of the most important elements of the concept. Acura is using the NEXERA Vision to introduce its next lighting signature, directly inspired by the brand’s “A” logo.

The ultra-thin headlights and taillights use what Acura calls “phantom lighting.” The lighting elements remain virtually hidden behind the bodywork when switched off, allowing the exterior surfaces to retain a particularly clean appearance. They only reveal themselves when illuminated.

Unlike many concept-car features, this lighting signature is destined to reach production relatively quickly. Acura has confirmed that it will first appear on the next-generation RDX Hybrid.

“To reinforce the new Acura styling identity, we developed a unique lighting signature inspired by the Acura ‘A’ mark—an unmistakable design element created to make this new era of Acura instantly recognizable,” Tsuchida explained.

The NEXERA Vision therefore gives us a fairly concrete preview of the direction Acura design will take over the next several years.

A Cockpit Built Around the Driver

The interior takes an equally radical approach. Acura is attempting to combine a sense of spaciousness with the much more intimate and enveloping environment typically associated with sports cars.

One of the most interesting solutions involves the front seats. They are mounted directly to the floor and remain fixed in place, significantly lowering the driving position. Instead, the steering wheel and pedals move to accommodate the driver.

In theory, this configuration optimizes the driving position while also lowering the centre of gravity and reducing the amount of vertical space required for the cabin.

The interior is predominantly black and white, with contrasting pink accents. Forged carbon fibre is combined with gloss-black surfaces and several materials presented as more sustainable.

Acura uses recycled aluminum, Alcantara incorporating certified post-consumer recycled polyester, and CircuLeather, a genuine leather material designed to support a more circular material lifecycle.

The Next RDX Will Be the First Real Test

The NEXERA Vision remains far removed from a production vehicle, particularly with its butterfly doors, centre-lock wheels and sports coupe architecture. Its real significance lies elsewhere.

Acura has made it clear that the concept establishes the new aesthetic foundation for the brand. The next-generation RDX Hybrid will therefore become the first production model to show just how much of the NEXERA Vision’s design philosophy survives the transition from concept to showroom.
