Fresh off producing origin stories for Ferrari and Lamborghini, Italian producer Andrea Iervolino is turning his attention to another storied name in Italian performance cars: Maserati. Directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Moresco, the film traces how brothers Alfieri, Bindo, and Carlo built the marque from the ground up, culminating in back-to-back Indianapolis 500 victories in 1939 and 1940 behind the wheel of an 8CTF nicknamed the Boyle Special.

A first teaser has just dropped, showing plenty of wheel-to-wheel action on narrow Italian roads from an era when racing carried real risk.
A Cast Built on Experience
Two bona fide screen legends top the bill: Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins both take on central roles, lending the gravitas they’re known for to this kind of period drama. Oscar nominee Andy García rounds out the trio of veterans, while Jessica Alba plays Carlo Maserati’s love interest.
Italian actors less familiar to North American audiences play the three brothers at the heart of the story, including Michele Morrone and Salvatore Esposito. Filming took place mainly in Modena, with some scenes shot in Rome. The production restored close to sixty vintage Maseratis from the 1920s and ’30s.
A Big Risk ?
The movie joins a recent wave of biopics built around big names in Italian car culture, following Adam Driver’s turn as Enzo Ferrari and a Lamborghini film that landed to a cooler critical reception.
Maserati’s history still stands on its own, though. It’s the second-oldest Italian performance brand after Alfa Romeo, and its name is forever tied to the exploits of driver Juan Manuel Fangio.
It’s worth wondering whether other pioneers, such as Ettore Bugatti, might eventually get their own big-screen treatment, a rumour already circulating in the industry.
One thing’s for sure: we’ll make a point of watching this one the moment it opens. The film premieres in Italy on October 15, and word is a North American release won’t be far behind.
