Alfa Romeo has Begun the Production of the Tonale PHEV for North America

Alfa Romeo said the North American version of the 2024 Tonale PHEV has now entered production in Naples.

  • The first units should reach their buyers in the United States in June.

  • This version will have 48 kilometres of electric range and a class-leading 285 horsepower output.

  • American buyers will only be offered the PHEV variant while Canadians will also be able to choose a 2.0L turbo model.

The North American version of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV began rolling off the assembly line last Friday.

The new compact crossover will be built at the Giambattista Vico factory in Naples, Italy, which will also produce the related Dodge Hornet.

According to Alfa Romeo, the first units of the Tonale PHEV will reach their buyers in North America in June.

This version of the Tonale features a new powertrain that combines a 1.3L turbocharged engine and a 90-kW electric motor that sources its power from a 15.5 kWh battery.

This gives the Tonale PHEV up to 48 kilometres of fully electric range and a class-leading output of 285 horsepower.

While this version will be the only one offered in the United States, where it will start at $42,995, Canadian buyers will be able to choose a non-hybrid Tonale powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

This version will also offer more power than its competitors, with an output of 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and it will allow Alfa Romeo to offer a more affordable small SUV since the PHEV will start at $54,995 in Canada.

Despite not being built in America, the Tonale can benefit from an EV tax credit of $7,500 for lease customers in the United States. In Canada, federal incentives of up to $5,000 apply and some provinces offer additional rebates.

While the two models are closely related, Dodge hasn’t announced the start of production for the 2024 Hornet PHEV, which means that the Alfa is likely to reach the market first.
